Interview with Troy Veenstra

What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love hearing from people that have read my books tell me how much they enjoyed it, how they cried, got angry, felt sad, happy, loved, ect. its amazing how the power of words, simple phrases can have such a toll on people.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything, without fans I'd be writing to the walls. Would I still write? yes but it wouldn't be as enjoyable without someone telling me what they thought about it. What they liked, didn't like ect.
What are you working on next?
Several titles. Currently working on book on my brother who suffers from Torticolois and Touretts, and how the world has more or less shunned him. Also working on an extreme horror, and a continuation to my dramatic romance novel.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Work sadly... that and the smile I see on my nieces face when she comes over to visit, its amazing how just hearing her say "Uncle Troy," and giggle can make any issues I seem to be having at the time melt away. Since learning that I might be dying in 5 to 10 years family and my written works have become a big issue for me.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I'm always writing...
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
yes, still have it. it wasn't the best of works, though it was kind of cool to read the Publishers Weekly Review on it, "this books is so badly in tune with the world it should be given an award for the worst book ever written," hey at least they read it. Oddly that made several people want to read it as well.
What is your writing process?
I don't do that whole, sit down, write out each chapter and whats going to happen. I basically start with an overall idea, and start from there, let the story write itself per se. At least when I write fiction. I will admit that when I wrote "The Murder of Jeffrey Dryden," I did do a lot of research first, and then decide how I wanted each chapter to progress, so I guess I do a little of both depending on the subject matter.
How do you approach cover design?
That's kind of odd actually. I don't really know. My mind just thinks of what I would like to see if I was shopping through a bookstore, though I will say that depending on the story, like say the mood, I look for and try to think of something that visually describes the overall feeling of the book.
What do you read for pleasure?
philosophical material, Law books, education books, stuff that make my mind think and learn. I like to be well rounded, kind of like the Cliff Clavin of Cheers.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Depends on what you mean by effective. I have had some good things go on with "word of mouth," however as I have found out with that process, if someone likes a book and tells another person about it, most times its not "You should go get yourself a copy too," its "here you can read my copy," which in turn takes a potential royalty away from me. Then again, however, I have to ask myself, did I start writing for the money or the enjoyment of sharing my ideas and thoughts with other people? I like that idea though I will admit that royalties do help me out too.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
The fact that I didn't have to wait to find an agent or be denied again by a publishing company that really wouldn't have done anything to help me out unless the title took off by itself. I have used agents in the past before, had been accepted by them and told all that "this is really good, it should do great," only to be lost in the shuffle of things. I like being in control of my own work and deciding right away what I am going to do with it than waiting years for it to maybe come out.
