Interview with Tim Carter

Published 2019-03-06.
What's the story behind your latest book?
You mean the Dog Training Toolkit? In ONE sentence? Phew.
I guess I wanted to figure out WHY so often a certain training technique works for one dog but not for the other - even more so, why a certain training technique may work today, but when you use it again tomorrow, or just an hour later, with the SAME dog, it suddenly doesn't work.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I love independence, I love freedom, I love choice, I couldn't bear having to wait for agents and then for publishers to give their okay, it's not in my nature to wait for others.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
They haven't yet, I have only just uploaded the first book that got out of the Amazon exclusivity contract. I hope Smashwords will smash my words, not against the wall, but onto many many dog lovers' breakfast tables and office desks. And many many more!
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
When my readers like what I wrote! No, when my readers love what I wrote! I imagine I am in a coffee table conversation with my reader, feeling what she or he feels, wondering what question or concern he or she may have.
What do your fans mean to you?
I would have liked to be a star musician, so you see, fans mean everything to me. I don't produce music now, still I try to arrange my words like a symphony to my reader's ears.
What are you working on next?
Not sure if it'll be the next thing I publish, but I have been thinking for a long time about dog quizzes, how to communicate dog insights in a fun way. With the interactivity of ebooks this is now more and more possible, so I hope at some point I make it come true.
Who are your favorite authors?
I am a kid in an adult body, so forgive me when I say I still enjoy good childrens books myself. I loved Roald Dahl's "Danny, the champion of the world", Frances H Burnett's Secret Garden, and Joanne K Rowling's Harry Potter series of books! I think myself into the main characters (and sometimes not the main).
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Ha, that is funny. For years I couldn't get out of bed. A day without pain, that would inspire me.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Reading
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I surf a lot, and though I like to think it's on ocean waves it's only on the internet. When I come across an intriguing cover or an interesting article I may check out the book straight away.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I haven't written stories yet, though I'd love to. I guess I should. I may lack the confidence though, fiction and non-fiction are very different genres. Just because I can explain well doesn't mean I can make up a good story.
What is your writing process?
First, research. Second, research. Third, research. Really, I waste too much time researching. I have all these books "How to write 10000 words a day" and such, and I have looked into them, but how to write more than a few hundred words a day is still a miracle to me.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
No, I don't remember the first story, sorry. But I remember that at school we had to read Salinger's "Catcher in the Rye" - and I hated it, because we were forced to read it. Force is a bad motivation, it destroys the fun.
What do you read for pleasure?
Thrillers, Science Fiction, science articles, and the newspaper.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Until you gift me that ubiquitous ipad to try out, I'll read on the e-reader I own, a kindle fire hd 8.9". But I also read quite a bit in laptop e-reading apps, they do have some advantages. I'd love to try out a kobo and nook, I've never seen them. Maybe Smashwords can gift me those too?
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
None. I don't know what I do wrong. Any help?
Describe your desk
Soft, flesh-like, covered by skin, above some pants, trousers or a blanket. It's my lap!
When did you first start writing?
Probably at school. The ABC. Or did the numbers come first? I don't remember.
