Interview with Kael Rhys

Published 2013-09-09.
What are you working on next?
Book two of the Horsemen Chronicles, of course :-) The series has become an amazing ride for me and I love how I can come up with this great idea or plot and as the story progresses that plot or idea evolves into something so unexpected. I'm also doing some short story prequels to the characters, such as Rise of the Iniquitous Son. I like that it allows me to give some of the supporting characters more depth and let their stories be told. I'm also working with some comic artists here and converting I Am Warcry and the series into a graphic novel. More on that as it progresses.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My kids. I'm not so sure I would label them screaming and fighting over who's cartoon show to watch as inspiring but it does make for a good alarm clock I can't ignore.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I love martial arts. Not only is it a great outlet and exercise, but it's something I can do with my kids and spend some precious time with them before they get too old and see how un-cool I really am.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, it was this very dark almost Edgar Allan Poe like poem I wrote in my teenage years. It started out as only a few sentences but ended up being this two page poem in first person about a guy who was so depressed that he chose to hang himself, but as the chair slipped away he realized all the great things in his life and changed his mind, but it was too late.
What is your writing process?
Step one: Find time. Step two: write it down. Step three through nine: Correct all my screw ups. Step ten: Find more time.
How do you approach cover design?
One of the artists I am working with on the Graphic Novel does them. The guy is amazing. I think he is the talent in our collaboration. He's Batman and I'm Robin.
What do you read for pleasure?
Have to be honest on this one. I'm more of a movie guy, but if I do find myself cuddling up with some reading materials it's usually a dark and creepy comic.
