Interview with Wilhelmina van Oort

Published 2013-10-06.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the Fraser Valley of British Columbia. For this particular series I spent years researching up on my hometown before I even attempted to start the series. The knowledge I gained from this, made my writing come alive and presented as much more believable.
When did you first start writing?
I first started writing at the age of eight when I joined the Children's Literature program and began to realize just how important it really was for me.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy for me is to tell a story that can change the readers life in some small way. Whether it be for them to learn about history, faith and friendships. The story should also take its reader to another place so that they can escape their own busy lives for just a little while.
What are you working on next?
I currently working on the second book to my series, which is called "Blinding Love". It takes place at the time of the first World War. I am very enthusiastic about this novel!!
Who are your favorite authors?
My favorite Authors are Karen Kingsbury, Beverly Lewis, Lorraine Snelling, Jane Austin, Nicolas Sparks and so many, many more. I am a big reader.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I spend a lot of my time with my family. I have six sisters, five brothers and over thirty nieces and nephews. Yes, that's right!! I'm a busy Auntie and I love every minute of it.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Knowing that I have the chance to change someone's life a little bit each day for the better. Whether it is just a smile, hug or having a listening ear.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, I believe the first real story I ever wrote was an assignment for a correspondance course when I was eight years old. I had been accepted into the program at a very young age so I wanted to make a good impression. And I did with this story. It was about an old man who reflects back on his life and time he spent with his brother who had died when they were just kids.
What is your writing process?
Because I grew up in a large, loud family, I usually need some sort of noise or music around me when I write. I go to coffee shops to write or just put some music on and get in the zone. People wonder how I can write with all the distractions but that is the only way I can get my inspiration going.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read a lot of Chrstian Romance Novels and different Christian self-help books. Any book that can help me escape for just a little while is great.
