Interview with Thom Tate

What are you working on next?
I will start my second full-length novel in my Blake MacKay series.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Unfortunately, I don't get to write as often as I'd like. I'm a full-time Sales Engineer for a software company. Add to the fact that I'm married with two young girls, coach and play lacrosse, I don't get much free time to write.
Who are your favorite authors?
Vince Flynn and Brad Thor
What is your writing process?
I come up with an idea and then jot it down on paper and then I just start writing. The story develops as I write. Sometimes I go back and make minor changes, but for the most part, I keep things the way they are the first time I write them.
How do you approach cover design?
I have a great illustrator. I'll tell him the synopsis of the story and let him come up with an idea. I generally have some kind of idea in mind, but I don't want to disrupt his creative juices. If I don't like what he comes up with, I'll tell him my idea and then he makes something that resembles that.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read Spy Thrillers, I just really enjoy them.
Describe your desk
It's a mess. Its two desks in the shape of an L. Two computers, one with two monitors. Each computer has external speakers because I listen to a lot of music. Papers from my work are all over the place. I have two external hard drives that I use to back-up everything.
Speaking of music, what do you listen to?
I have two favorite genres; 80's alternative and Gothic Industrial. I love bands from the 80's like Gene Loves Jezebel, Oingo Boingo, Depeche Mode, Dead or Alive, Mighty Lemon Drops,Pseudo Echo, PIL, etc.. On the other side, I listen to modern synth bands like Assemblage 23, Colony 5, Funker Vogt, but I also like a lot of harder German and Swedish bands like Gothminister, Unheilig, VNV Nation, Eisbrecher, Deathstars, Celldweller, etc.. My wife loves the 80's stuff but hates the other stuff.
When did you first start writing?
January of 2011. I wrote a 90,000 word novel in six weeks and invented the character Blake MacKay, which I put in my "Covert World" series. I've not published the novel yet because my writing style has changed and improved over the past few years.
What's the story behind your latest book?
"Red Storm". It's the fifth and perhaps the last of the novella's that I'll write. Some crazy Russian Billionaire wants to take over the world. A bit cliche I'd admit, but the way he tries it is pretty ingenious. Anyway, his plans come to a halt when a woman working for him discovers what's going on. She steals incriminating evidence and of course, he has a group of thugs that try to hunt her down and kill her. In comes Blake MacKay to the rescue. He has to keep her safe, get the incriminating evidence and find an agent that has disappeared in the wilderness of Siberia. Of course there is a ticking time bomb and he needs to get this all done in a short period of time. This book is packed with tons of action.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I just wanted my work out there. I didn't want to wait and get rejection after rejection. If success comes, it comes, otherwise I just enjoy the writing.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
This sounds crazy, but I get to play God. I create people and I decide if they live or die. Because of the genre I write in, I can be very kind or extremely cruel. I also enjoy hearing how people enjoyed reading my books.
Do you have ideas for future books?
Absolutely. They're just itching to get out.
