Interview with Thom Tate

What are you working on next?
I'm finishing up the edits to my forth book in my "Covert World" series. It's called "Intercept" and I think it's the best one yet. I am about a third finished with the fifth book. I've entitled it "Red Storm"
Who are your favorite authors?
Vince Flynn and Brad Thor
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Unfortunately, I don't get to write as often as I'd like. I'm a full-time Sales Engineer for a software company, so I do that full time. Add to the fact that I'm married with two young girls, coach and play lacrosse, I don't get much free time to write.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
No. It was probably in school and I only did it because it was required.
What is your writing process?
I come up with an idea and then jot it down on paper and then I just start writing. The story develops as I write. Sometimes I go back and make minor changes, but for the most part, I keep things the way they are the first time I write them.
How do you approach cover design?
I have a great illustrator. I'll tell him the synopsis of the story and let him come up with an idea. I generally have an idea in mind, but I don't want to disrupt his creative juices. If I don't like what he comes up with, I'll tell him my idea and then he makes something that resembles that.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read Spy Thrillers, I just really enjoy them.
Describe your desk
It's a mess. Its two desks in the shape of an L. Two computers, one with two monitors. Each computer has external speakers because I listen to a lot of music. Papers from my work are all over the place. I have two external hard drives that I use to back-up everything.
Speaking of music, what do you listen to?
I have two favorite genres; 80's alternative and Gothic Industrial. I love bands from the 80's like Gene Loves Jezebel, Oingo Boingo, Depeche Mode, Dead or Alive, Mighty Lemon Drops,Pseudo Echo, PIL, etc.. On the other side, I listen to modern synth bands like Assemblage 23, Colony 5, Funker Vogt, but I also like a lot of harder German and Swedish bands like Gothminister, Unheilig, VNV Nation, Eisbrecher, Deathstars, Celldweller, etc.. My wife loves the 80's stuff but hates the other stuff.
When did you first start writing?
January of 2011. I wrote a 90,000 word novel in six weeks and invented the character Blake MacKay, which I put in my Covert-world series. I've not published the novel yet because it would be so expensive to edit it. That's how I came up with the short story series. I could afford the editing and hopefully it will generate enough interest in my character that my novel will be moderately successful when I do publish it.
What's the story behind your latest book?
"Intercept", which will hopefully be published in early January is about three different groups all after the same guy. He's a nuclear expert and is trying to get back to Iran. Mossad wants him dead, a small terrorist cell wants to kidnap him so they can ransom him off and get money to refill their coffers and Blake MacKay is tasked with bringing him back to the U.S. They all converge and collide in Vienna and mayhem ensues. Blake and the female Mossad agent have a past together, so that adds another element of tension to the story. The ending is crazy and the last few chapters are non-stop action. I really enjoyed writing it and hopefully people will enjoy reading it. It's my longest "short story" to date at just under 24,000 words.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I just wanted my work out there. I didn't want to wait and get rejection after rejection. If success comes, it comes, otherwise I just enjoy the writing.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
This sounds crazy, but I get to play God. I create people and I decide if they live or die. Because of the genre I write in, I can be very kind or extremely cruel. I also enjoy hearing how people enjoyed reading my books.
Do you have ideas for future books?
Absolutely. I've got several ideas for the sixth book in the Covert-World series and I've got the premise already laid out for the follow-up novel to "Spear Garden", which isn't published yet.
