Interview with Anfal Khaliq

When did you first start writing?
When I was nine. I started writing books when I was eleven.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I've always wanted to turn towards the fantasy route because I like reading fantasy books a lot - and voila! Rising Fang is my first fantasy novel.
What are you working on next?
I am working on a book called 'SHATTERED' next, here is the synopsis:

With her mother lost to her at fifteen, it feels like Jade's life is totally, and utterly, destroyed. As an only child, living in a run-down council estate with a dad who's never home, Jade has never felt so alone.

After a drunken party with friends, Jade's father finds himself in an impossible situation – and before he knows it, the police are on the look for him.

Jade is being pounded with the pressure from her dad, but she can't bear it. She makes efforts to escape, leaving with nothing but her talent – singing.

Out there, Jade's never been in so much danger. Seeking to live in an abandoned house, she meets someone very special there, someone that could just change her life …

In front of a microphone and a massive audience, all Jade can do now is sing her heart out, as she battles for the only thing she's ever wanted – her father's love …
Who are your favorite authors?
My favourite authors are Jacqueline Wilson, J.K. Rowling, Cathy Cassidy, Roald Dahl, Stephanie Meyer, Karen McCombie, C.S. Lewis, Meg Cabot, and many many more!
What is your writing process?
It all starts off with an idea. Then I start planning. Then I start writing. I edit when I have finished. I proceed to 2nd and 3rd drafts. I proofread. Then I scan on drawings and add them in, touching up the layout, and when everything's top-notch I submit them for publishing.
How do you approach cover design?
I try and get some good photography done. For my novels, I use photography on the front covers, and for my short stories, I use cartoon images or coloured drawings.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Social media - definitely. Twitter is a must - and Goodreads is really helpful too! However, the most effective way was building up a website.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Manchester, UK, and I still live here!
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
It's given me independence and helped me to distribute my work in a very popular format. It's easy to do.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Sharing the work!
What do your fans mean to you?
They mean everything - they give me the courage to keep on writing, and they really touch me with the support they give.
