Interview with Augusto Santa Cruz

Published 2013-09-01.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I was born in a small town in Argentina. Being from a small town helps you understand life a different way than when you are brought up in metropolitan area. My childhood and pre-teen years were spent constantly being outdoors and this helped me build a strong relationship relationship with nature. My writing has been greatly influenced by this factor as I believe one's connection with nature is primordial in order to express one's inner thoughts and questions.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing at about 15 years of age. My English teacher Mrs. Albert had given us an assignment about the etymology of our names, that's how I wrote my first poem. This was a great challenge for me for I was a hispanic boy who was taking his first English Honors class.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
An old friend of mine published his first book and I wanted to give it a try. Over the years I had written so many pieces that I felt it was a great opportunity to share it with the world.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Writing allows me to connect with my inner soul, it helps me open up that pandora box within myself. My greatest joy is basically keeping a connection with my inner self.
What do your fans mean to you?
They motivate me to keep writing, to keep on going. I think that one of the greatest perks of being a writer is knowing that people out there are waiting for that piece of your soul.
What are you working on next?
I am writing my first novel.
Who are your favorite authors?
Edgard Allan Poe, Isabel Allende, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Haruki Murakami and the list goes on.
What is your writing process?
It depends, sometimes I just sit on the computer and start writing whatever comes into my mind. However, most of the times, things that happen to me or other people around me give that inspiration and words just start flowing into my head, so I just grab whatever I have at hand and jot it down.
How do you approach cover design?
I design the covers myself. Usually, I try to express the content of my work so I create the concept for it. It is pretty fun, I learned many new skills writing my first book.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read novels and short stories. Currently I am finishing 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami and I highly recommend it!
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My iPad is my first e-reading device of choice.
