Interview with Dominique Wilkins

What's the story behind your latest book?
Personally as I've been growing closer to God and have been actually looking and listening to people, I realize that even people who believe in God and who know him, often they are faced with their own complicated situations, where they ask why or their faith may waiver. In this case, they need to be reminded of God's love and the blessings they've experienced, even while they feel as though they are being cursed or tested. They simply need to be reminded that they need a little more Jesus. Which is the title of my latest book! :)
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I tried to send query letters to traditional publishing houses and realized that at the time, there were so many obstacles to get around to get these much needed books out, that it was in my best interest to do it myself. They say, that if you want something done right, you must do it yourself, so I did!
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I absolutely love how Smashwords caters to the indies. It is so straightforward and encourages you to get your story out without all of the road blocks. It is so user friendly and still gives you the professionalism that you need to excel!
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I LOVE when someone reads my book and say they "needed to read this" or "this book took me to a place, that I needed to go." These are the responses that I've received and these are the reasons, I love writing these books with these messages, because people are receiving them! Love it!
What do your fans mean to you?
I don't call them fans, I consider them warriors in the same struggle. As long as people believe in what I am doing and they pass the word along, I am SO grateful and excited to know that as many people there are that do the wrong and cause the drama in the world, there are just as many people who have common sense and are God fearing people who want to seek change and spread God's love.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I am excited to get out of the bed each day, because there was an idea that I was working on the night before that has not been finished, or a book that needs to be written and I've gotta write it!! :)
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I love squeezing into one bed with my husband and children to watch a movie, only to find that the old people have missed most of it by falling asleep!! Smh lol
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
On Facebook, I've got plenty of author friends, who I've had the privilege of meeting. There's tons of good authors and good books out there and when you find like-minded people, they refer you to good books!
What is your writing process?
I write only when I am so passionate about a subject, that I can't sleep or function until I get it out and when I get it out, I can't shut up, until everyone reads it!
How do you approach cover design?
I think that the cover has to have meaning. It's got to make sense, whether it tells the story before you read the book or gives you that ah ha after you've read it.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Chicago's Englewood area. I just left this past year, because I decided that that was the only way that my children would live. In such a high crime and low morale area, these stories that I write are so very necessary. There way of life is full of settling and it shouldn't be. I got out and I just want to do whatever I can to motivate others to do the same and from there they can grow and bloom and be happy!
