Interview with Bob E Sherman

Published 2013-08-21.
What motivated you to start writing?
I am very opinionated and my opinions are not mainstream. So I started putting my thoughts and opinions down on paper. After a year I had enough essays to put into a book. This became my first book: Am I the Only One That Signals? I came up with the title because my opinions are as unusual as my habit for using turn signals.
Your website calls you a Person of Interest; what make you a person of interest?
I admit I took the name from the TV show. However, I am not about to become a victim or perpetrator of a crime. I am anything but average. I wear narrow shoes, don’t eat seafood, don’t have a dog or children. I do have one live plant. I write provocative humor. My essays are humorous or satirical and are intended to provoke discussion and debate.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up on the Jersey Shore. I don't think this had any particular influence on my writing. I didn't start writing until I retired. My early writing credits included an "F" in English Literature.
What books or articles have you published?
I have published four books: Am I the Only One That Signals?; a second edition, subtitled The Journey Continues; More Bull; and They Don't Speak Spanish in Brasil. I was also a columnist for three years for a South Florida nautical newspaper. Signals and the second edition are tongue-in-cheek essays on everything from Alpha to Zulu. More Bull is an anthology of my articles, and letters written to newspapers and politicians. They Don't Speak Spanish is a memoir of the two years I lived in Brazil.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My iPad, which I won in a contest with a picture of Molly the manatee and my Manatee Stew recipe.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Giving away free books. However, it's not very profitable.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I worked in Brazil for two years as an auditor with Ernst & Young. The book is a memoir and travelogue written in my usual humorous tone. The title comes form the fact that many people think Spanish is spoken in Brazil. Smashwords readers know, of course, it's Portuguese.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
One thousand rejection letters from agents and publishers.
What do your fans mean to you?
My writing requires a following that appreciates my sense of humor. I always appreciate comments, even if they are negative. At least someone is reading my books or articles.
Describe your desk
A clean desk is a sign of a sick mind.
How do you spend all the profits from writing?
Last week I bought a pair of socks and some underwear.
