Interview with Dahlia Savage

Published 2013-12-14.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
It was about a young girl who meets an alien girl and they become friends. I remember that it there was very little about the story that was science-fiction. It was about the friendship. And to this day, friendships and other types relationships is what I write about.
When did you first start writing?
Second grade was when I wrote my first story. I didn't write another until the sixth grade. From there, I really didn't write much other than some random ideas that would pop in my head that wouldn't go past a few chapters until I was 22. I was out of school and living on my own and had a story idea, so that was when I became more dedicated to my craft.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
The ability to remain creative and work independently. I feel that I don't have to be put into a box as an indie author because although my style will remain consistent and the underlying focus on relationships will be the same, the content may vary and walk the line between genres and the length of each story will be different. As an indie author, I feel that I'm able to do that.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Indiscretion was originally a two-page short that came from a writing prompt by my creative writing professor. When the semester was over, I really wanted to lengthen it so I spent that summer drafting what turned into a novella.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I'm a Detroit born and raised girl. Being from Detroit does influence my writing as many of my characters are either from Detroit, grew up in Detroit, or have some kind of connection to the city. Detroit has so much character and wonderful qualities that, unfortunately, isn't shown in the media. I try my best to showcase the good.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I really love my Kindle because it is so lightweight and user-friendly. Unfortunately, it recently went on to Kindle heaven. However, I recently got an iPad mini as a gift and I'm enjoying reading on that with my Kindle app.
Describe your desk
A hot mess! Seriously, I work at home, I study for school, and handle family business from that one desk, so one would like find all my electronics, notebooks, textbooks, bills, artwork from my son's class, and a random Happy meal toy on it. Underneath all the paper is a really nice glass desk with a white pineapple pattern held up by black wooden legs. Gotta love IKEA.
Who are your favorite authors?
Eric Jerome Dickey, Lolita Files, and Kimberla Lawson Roby
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Usually by browsing amazon and reading synopses. Or from the various writer blogs I read.
How do you approach cover design?
I approach it having an idea of the look based on what my story is about, such as do I need something light and fun or more dark and dramatic. I ask myself questions like:
What's my theme?
Should the artwork be animated, use vectors, or a still photo?
What colors do I see on the cover?
From there, I browse varioius royalty-free image sites, like Dreamstime, to see if I can find pictures to match the idea in my head. I'll also search for different fonts to see what pops.
