Interview with Duncan Evans

What are you working on next?
Just published Digital Portrait Projects and am now working on a Practical Digital Landscapes book. This will cover actual real-world scenarios, not just print a few classic images and say use a tripod.
Who are your favorite photographers?
Portrait people are my favourites: Helmut Newton, Bob Carlos Clarke, David Bailey, Terry O'Neill.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Bills and deadlines first, then seeing what creative ideas I can make happen.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Taking photos, gaming, my motorbike or watching movies on my home theatre system.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Favourite authors release new books on this format.
Do you remember the first photography book you ever wrote?
Yes. I've written over a dozen for publishers such as AVA Books, Ilex Press, RotoVision. My latest print book is Digital Mayhem: 3D Landscape Techniques for Focal Press. All about 3D and it's very good :)
What is your writing process?
Contents ideas first, then a full list of structure, then put it all into a spreadsheet with page numbers. Then start researching or looking for contributors. Then start writing. At the end, there's design, checking PDF proofs, covers, back pages, supporting websites and finally, in print terms, a book. Writing an ebook for yourself is much quicker and easier.
How do you approach cover design?
Impact, clarity, relevance.
What do you read for pleasure?
Military history and fiction, sci-fi and fantasy, photography, physics, history for books.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Not a choice, but I use an iPad and Android tablets for mobile use.
