Interview with Alexander Lewis

Published 2014-03-17.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have a Nook and I use it extensively. But I have friends who use a Kindle with equal enthusiasm and my mother e-reads from her I-pad and wouldn't be without it. Whatever reader helps you be a reader works for me!
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Well, I told my wife and daughter and several of my friends that I wrote a book. Is there more to it than that ;-)? Seriously, this is my first book so I'm just learning to do that...
Describe your desk
A complete mess. My electronic desktop is much better. A clean empty desk is indicative of a clean empty mind. Can't have creativity without a bit of chaos!
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a suburb outside of Philadelphia with a lot of competitive high-achieving classmates. This helped me write about the mid-Atlantic locations that I chose and the characters I created. They say write what you know ;-)
When did you first start writing?
I'm 54 years old and this is my first book!
What's the story behind your latest book?
I have read a number of non-fiction books about physicians and doctors in training. Those books tended to focus on impressive feats of medical skill but didn't really reveal much about the EMOTIONAL development and experiences of medical students. I set out to use a fictional backdrop to give feeling to my character's very typical clinical experiences the way an impressionist might use lots of extra colors and brushstrokes to create feelings from a photograph. I don't claim I actually accomplished that but that is what I was trying to do.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Do you have any idea how difficult it is to get an agent or submit unsolicited manuscripts to mainstream publishers ;-)? The truth is that I have always been a bit of an impatient person and I decided that after I got through the writing process, why not just put it out there and see who reads it?
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
There are three things I enjoy most about writing. The first is telling a story that I don't think many people have heard. The second is creating characters that seem real and relatable. The third is exposing the inner thoughts of characters--describing what they would really like to say while they are saying something else entirely.
Who are your favorite authors?
I am a big fan of Daniel Silva, John Grisham and Stuart Woods. Recently, I have also been reading a lot of Lisa Scottoline.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I am a full-time family physician which remains endlessly fascinating and rewarding after more than 25 years. I love spending time with my wife and daughter. I like to travel, study languages, sing in a choir and go to museums, musical plays and concerts.
