Interview with Doug Romig

Published 2014-04-19.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The Cryptos Files: ICE was inspired by the time I worked as a computer tech in graduate school. After watching Hitchcock's To Catch a Thief, it occurred to me that a thief would be the perfect person to be the cyber security expert.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I have always enjoyed writing. I sat down one day to start writing a short story that kept going and going until it was a the novel Angelcide.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love hearing from readers who enjoy the stories. That is what motivates me to keep writing.
What do your fans mean to you?
They are the reason I write. If I can touch the life of one person with the meaning behind the story, then I have done my job well.
What are you working on next?
Right now I am working on the sequel to Angelcide called New Fallen which is planned for June of 2014. I also have begun work on Reunion, the next of the Abby Chilton Novels; and also Interpol, a Jonas Lange Adventure, is in the works.
Who are your favorite authors?
Patrick McManus, Dave Barry, and Douglas Adams influenced the humor in my writing. Stephen King, Michael Connelly, and James Patterson influenced my storytelling.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I have the best job ever. Getting up and writing about the stories that began in my dreams is the perfect way to start my day. Then it flows from there.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I love to spend time with my sons, hiking, cooking, or just enjoying time strolling around watching people.
What is your writing process?
I am a messy writer. I know how the story begin and ends, but the 98% in the middle is a mystery to me until I write it. Major characters are profiled and planned. Minor characters just show up as the story goes.
What do you read for pleasure?
I love to read stories that keep me guessing until the end. If I known what will happen by the halfway point, I get bored and move on to the next one. I love mysteries and scifi.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have a Kindle Fire.
