Interview with Conrado & Naama Maletá-Sarid

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
We are a couple, Conrad was born and raised in Santiago de Cuba, the biggest city at east of Cuba island. Naama was born and raised in Tel Aviv, Israel.
Of course, both of us we have so many things that we got in our early years. Each country was giving us something. Culture, education, experiences and the artistic personality that we both have now.
When did you first start writing?
Like may of, we started in our years as teenagers. We both did mainly poetry, but it is later easy to understand that not all you think is good in poetry deserve be published or even read in public.
What's the story behind your latest book?
We, as a team of artists, now are working in a long and carefully curated collection of small photo books. We wish that all the readers have access to a different point of view about places, humans, situations. Our goal is creating a third eye for each of you and push up a particular and aesthetically better way for understanding life.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Our neighborhood and the people her are the land mark stone! They inspired us and we are learning from them. We are doing this books inspired by indie community of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NYC.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords is the place where we learnt the How. It is invaluable.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
We more than writers are visual artists. We use our books as a door, a gate of sharing and social interaction. Can be more joyful that?
What do your fans mean to you?
A lot. We ARE OUR fans.
What are you working on next?
We are working in some new books about human body. We are also preparing a wonderful and big book about New York' urban skyline.
Who are your favorite authors?
Umberto Eco and Amos Oz.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Our baby and our neighbors. Yes, our neighbors.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Having loooooooong walk all around New York City. Also traveling out the USA, specially to Spain, Malta (our secret slow motion paradise), as well as Cuba.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Mainly through recommendations of friends.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Something about the Aztec empire. Was like 16 pages story weirdly created. I was 11 years old.
What is your writing process?
First creating a long therm plan for a book collection, later working in detail number by number.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I am pretty sure it was a russian traditional tale.
How do you approach cover design?
Naama is a great architect and graphic design. In our team she is the cover designer. (highly recommended)
What do you read for pleasure?
Newspapers, always newspapers.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
twitter and facebook. and talking clearly to friends that we need their help.
Describe your desk
A short IKEA table completely covered with iranian fabrics.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
iPad. It is simple.
