Interview with Emari Valdicar

Published 2014-08-05.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I just had to tell my stories. There were times when I couldn't even sleep until I wrote it down in a few pieces of paper or on my laptop. Even as a young boy, I remember recording these stories on this digital recorder and adding special effects to liven the storytelling - crunching grass for walking or water faucet dripping-things like that, and then throughout my middle school years I contributed to the school newspaper, writing articles on taboo subjects no one wanted to talk about.
What is your writing process?
An outline is crucial, to know where the story is headed, but do not follow it exactly as planned, sometimes a story takes on a different path and that is good as long as all the major points are resolved at the end.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I am currently finishing the supernatural gay romance series Monster Lovers. Even though the whole werewolf / vampire thing isn't real, the story behind it is. It is about a great friendship I had while growing up in Texas, about how I felt, being in love with someone who never loved me back. My experiences and things he taught me will forever be with me and now part of those scenarios are part of the series.
What are you working on next?
The next project is one that has been completed for sometime now. It is a sci-fi fantasy novel,my first full novel, written about four years ago. It took me about two years to write since it was done in my spare time. Title is pending, but it should be out early 2015.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Lord knows I'm not in it for the money! It pays a few bills here and there, but that's it. I just love how words connect with readers and in some cases help someone who is going thru the same situations I did.
What do your fans mean to you?
I love my fans! They buy the books, t-shirts, and sometimes send me emails on questions they might have. It is hard to keep up with all the emails I receive, but I do look at them and send a short reply - my fans know I may reply a month later - as writing is only a tiny part of my life. I still have to work, do groceries, and pay bills like the rest.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I lost my best friend to cancer a few years ago. It was the hardest thing I had to endure. So life, being alive, waking up, breathing air into my lungs, that is a gift and we should cherish every waking moment with those we love and make memories that will last beyond our time here...
