Interview with Emilie P Bush

When did you first start writing?
I started my career as a professional writer when I was 19-years old. I sold my first news story to NPR. Over the years - I sold a lot of them. I started to write fiction just a few years ago, after I left broadcasting. It's a totally different animal.
What do your fans mean to you?
I've met a few of my fans and it's surprising how I react to people who have read my books. It's like I'm okay with folks that HAVE read them and want to talk about it, and it's also okay to talk to people who have NOT read my books. Those who are in the MIDDLE of reading my books... I don't know WHAT to do or say!
Fans keep me going - I get so much motivation from folks who ask for more. However, when someone says, "Oh, I loved your book! I read it in a DAY! I think in my head - GEEZ! It took me a year to write it - SLOW DOWN!
Oh, well. I guess I have to write faster.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I believe 9/10ths of life was showing up. So, I show up to what I can! I've been to so many genre conventions now, I feel like that's the heart of my marketing. The last 1/10th is being ready when you get there. I have lots of knowledge on publishing, Steampunk, women in science fiction, journalism, how to be edited and more, and I provide great value to a convention. And I sell well there. Secondly, I network well with other Steampunks. My children's books have been real hits because of it (both were Amazon bestsellers!)
