Interview with Georgiann Baldino

What is your newest release?
"Journal of a Cavalry Bugler" is historical fiction about a young Civil War soldier, based on a real cavalry bugler who knew Abraham Lincoln while growing up. When he was a boy, Lincoln visited their family home. Also compelling for me as a novelist, the hero's service during the War bridged the gap between officers and enlisted men. He served as Sherman’s bugler and part of Grant’s escort, witnessed famous generals firsthand, but also performed guard duty and skirmished behind fence rows with African American troops. His position in the middle, between headquarters and enlisted men, allowed me to depict commanders as well as privates.

The launch date is April 11, 2014, and fans can pre-order a copy on Smashwords, Apple ibooks or Barnes & Noble.
Can you share a little of your new book, Journal of a Cavalry Bugler, with us?
The story is based on the real-life, Civil War experiences of Charles Henry Dickey. His father, T. Lyle Dickey, practiced law in the same courtrooms as Abraham Lincoln, and Charlie grew up knowing Mr. Lincoln as a family friend. Here is how I described Charlie's first glimpse of Abraham Lincoln:

Lincoln’s towering figure approached our home on Worth Bluff. I was four years old, too early to remember, but others told the story many times, eager to claim Mr. Lincoln’s friendship. I had lined tin toy soldiers along the floor for the Battle of Bunker Hill, but huge feet pounded the boards, and the burden of Mr. Lincoln’s weight made the porch groan. He jerked off a stovepipe hat, and a thick bush of black hair sprang ungovernable in every direction. High bones, hollow cheeks, prominent nose and a sleepy eye made me run and hide from the ogre.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Three of my novels were published by small presses, which proved I was on the right track with my writing. But the process of finding a traditional publisher and waiting for royalties was disappointing. Then publishers and agents started to cut back, so it seemed natural to take advantage of the growing interest in ebooks, eliminate the gatekeepers and control my own fate. It's a great time to be a writer because of access to social media and self-publishing. Rather than spend time and money sending out queries, I polish and publish. Then let readers decide which stories they love.
When did you first start writing?
In high school, rather than talk to someone about coming-of-age trials, I wrote about them. It was more than "Dear Diary," however. Fiction, essays and bad poetry filled my notebooks. Later, I lost the early books. As I developed my craft, I wondered how good the first attempts were, or how bad. I'd love to go back and read them now. Perhaps one of the stories could be a bestseller. One of the earliest stories written after I began to save them became one of my personal best, not as originally written, however. It started out as a story about sibling rivalry, but then I used the competition and fights between two brothers in a story where one of them is taken hostage. While he's held captive, he longs to be with the brother he didn't appreciate before. "Hostage" continues to sell many years after it was written.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I’ll give an example: A literary journal published my second short story in 2003 and paid me $10. That might have been the end of it. However, in 2010 I released “Hostage” again as an e-story. Readers all over the world now have access, and the story sells in Australia, Europe and Canada as well as the U.S., receiving four-star reviews. Traditional magazines and journals have little use for something that is previously published. But because the story is timeless, issuing it through Smashwords gave it an audience I never could have reached before.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Being able to enjoy all the benefits of the present but also "live" in the past. When I write historical fiction or history, I immerse myself in the ways people got caught up in great events. I focus many stories on the American Civil War because what happened then still abides in our conscience. I love to put a human face on history. The limits in nineteenth century society adds conflict and develops story lines. Digitized texts of the period give me direct access to what people experienced, but those texts are often hard to put into perspective. From letters and excerpts alone, it is hard to understand the huge background of the Civil War. So I write for people who don't understand the circumstances and try to make history come alive.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I am an avid gardener. I remember reading an interview with Irving Stone, who said that when he was struggling to write, he'd go out into the garden and pull weeds. He reported that it didn't take long, perhaps 15 minutes, for him to clear his head and return to being productive. I dream about being as good as Irving Stone, but no matter how each book turns out, I love tinkering in the garden. The plants don't require witty conversation or polished prose. They just appreciate any attention I give.

To stay fit, I enjoy yoga and an occasional kayak excursion. I also volunteer at a local cancer center and facilitate a journaling support group. We meet once a month. I provide a prompt and along with the social worker and survivors write about things that make us well.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I use keyword searches almost exclusively. Subjects interest me most. And the wonderful things about ebooks is that I can sample the writing. If an author gives me 15% to review, I know the topic is one I want and the author is one I will enjoy reading.
