Interview with Kevin Guest

Published 2013-08-29.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Mesquite, Texas, a suburb of Dallas that was blessed with plenty of wooded parks for children to play safe and let their imaginations flow.
When did you first start writing?
I began writing in the fourth grade. I told the story about a futuristic young man who graduated high school and built his own spaceship, called Roman 1. Ironically, as much as I would like to bring that story forward today, outer space is just not a topic I have learned to write.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book, "Texas Hauntings: The Legend of Anderson," tells the backstory, as well as the continuance of the hauntings surrounding Dr. Anderson's life work. In the first book, "The Haunting of Reindeer Manor," the story begins with Anderson's manuscript, titled, 'Texas Hauntings,' being rejected from the publisher. It seemed that a good fit to end the series, was to create a story that would circle back to that pivotal moment when Anderson learned of Reindeer Manor.
However, as Dr. Grant, Anderson's successor learned, when dealing with the secrets of the dead, its best not to pry to much, less you may join them.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I love telling stories, and this seemed like a great way to share amongst the masses.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
It has given me channels that I could not have gained on my own.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Being read and being stumped when people know more about my book than I do. This is particularly true in my haunted series, Zoo'd, and Doug: The Despised Angel.
What do your fans mean to you?
Their awesome and a joy to speak with. I am always humbled when someone compliments me. However, when I recieve negative feedback, I take it to heart and try to figure out if their is something I can do to remedy the situation.
What are you working on next?
You never know :)
However, in one review, a woman was so touched by my story, I decided to write a sequel, in her honor.
Who are your favorite authors?
King, Twain, Crichton, Grisham, Matheson
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The alarm clock. No, seriously....the cat.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Working, like everyone else!
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Randomly
