Interview with Jennifer Shank-Maxwell

Published 2014-05-31.
When did you first start writing?
I first started writing in middle school, many many years ago! Like most girls that age, I was given a diary as a gift, and the rest just followed.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy I get from writing is inner peace. I am never so happy as when I am completely immersed in writing. Well, that and when a reader tells me they want more of my work.
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans mean everything! I want to hear what they have to say, good and bad. How can I grow as a writer without input?
What are you working on next?
I will be finishing my degree, but I have many works started from novel length to more shorts. One of my fans requested more shorts. Others have requested all my novels be completed. Short answer made long, I am not sure, but there will be something.
Who are your favorite authors?
I have so many favorite authors! Dean Koontz, Tolkien, Stephen King, Anne Rice, Fred Saberhagen, Pier Anthony, and the list goes on! If it is the written word, I am in love.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Each day is an adventure and I can't wait to see what the day brings.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I am not writing, I am living life. I drive to new places, eat at new restaurants, and discover new experiences.
Describe your desk
My desk is an old wooden library table. I have inspirational art and artefacts littering my desk and entire house, most of which can be seen from my desk. I like to surround myself with old stuff. They have so many tales to tell.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has given me the power to produce and distribute my work to the public. Without Smashwords, it might be years before my work could be available.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read anything and everything, but mostly dark romance or horror. I will read anything recommended to me. If there is no book available, I will read pamphlets or instruction manuals.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Of course, like most writers, I always dreamed of being a professional author. One day a few years ago, I found myself at a major turning point in my life. I really could go any direction, so I decided to make my dream a reality. Becoming an indie author has been a natural fit, since indie is short for independent and that is my way of life.
