Interview with Joy Spraycar

Published 2013-09-13.
How do you approach cover design?
I have an idea of what will convey the story in a picture, and that is what I want on my cover. I have an artist in Romania, Amelia Chitulescu who always creates exactly what I see in my mind. It is important to me for the characters and theme to be conveyed in one look, and I think my covers offer that.
What do you read for pleasure?
I love all sorts of book. I'm really into Regency Romance right now. But I enjoy mystery, romance and Sci-Fi.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I love my kindle app on my phone.
Describe your desk
My desk is littered with papers, edits, book ideas, calendars and everything inbetween. But most importantly my glass of Coke is right there. LOL.
When did you first start writing?
I began writing in Jr. High. I had several great English teachers who really fostered my writing. And it just built from there. I've always loved telling stories, ie. Lyinging, lol, but imagination is a great thing. You can be anybody and do anything in your mind.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book is fostered by my son's interest in WWE. He always wanted to be a contender, but he is really a big softy. So my Hero is based loosely on that kind loving boy who wanted to be a tough guy.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I had three different book, three different publishers, and three different not so great experiences. But the main thing is I can do my writing my way, promote, and be who I want to be. Promote the way I want, and hope that readers will find me more approachable. Indie is the best way to go, in my opinion.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love connecting with readers. But getting the stories told and having others really enjoy and relate to your characters it the greatest joy for me. I love my characters, and when others love them just as much, I feel we have a common ground.
What do your fans mean to you?
My Fans are everything. There is nothing cooler (or scarier) when they see my car, of course my add is on the back, and they honk at me while driving on the freeway. I love to meet fans, and do community fairs and booksignings to get out amongst them. You guys rock!!!
What are you working on next?
I'm working on two series. The first one begins with Changing of the Glads, recently released and it will be a three book series. The second series is the Keepers. Hopefully the first book, Keeper of Hell's Island will be out the first of 2014.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I have so much to do that lounging in bed isn't an option. I have horses that need to be fed, work, and of course my writing. It is really hard to wait until everything else is done to get back to my latest WIP
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
One of my favorite things to do is ride my horse, but I also enjoy watching movies and reading. I do waste time playing the piano and working in my church, not that those are bad things, but definately nothing productive. Singing and hanging with my husband also are things I enjoy.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I check out suggested reads based on what I've bought. But I also like to look at covers and pick based on those.
What is your writing process?
I'm a pantser, so I write whoever is yelling the loudest in my head. I can tell when a scene is really good because I don't even have to go back and read it. When I'm done writing it, I'm exhausted because there was so much emotion.
