Interview with K. A. Laity

What's the story behind your latest book?
A CUT-THROAT BUSINESS is the third novel in the CHASTITY FLAME series. Because she's exploring her first stable relationship, I wanted to move the focus from her sexual shenanigans to emphasise even more the thrills and suspense. So she's facing two dangerous men, not only at the same time, but they end up ganging up on her.
What are you working on next?
I just finished another crime-related novel, WHITE RABBIT, which has a slightly supernatural element as well as a noirish feel. I have a few non-fiction projects to work on then I have to choose between a novel that's a ghost story and another that's based on a medieval romance. Maybe I'll just work on both at once (as usual).
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The story must be told! There are so many stories in my head and I know I'll never get them all out but I have to do my best to try.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Creating something out of nothing: it's the real magic. You can create whole worlds or just new people, make them talk, meet one another, live, love, die. It's great fun.
What is your writing process?
Get up, grab computer, write. If I'm lucky (i.e. I'm in Scotland) tea magically appears by my side while this happens. If I'm in NY I have to go get tea myself and feed the cat, then I get back in bed with the cat and dog and write a little. I take a break for a while then write more in my office. Later in the day I relax and talk to humans. Unless I have a looming deadline, then everything gets chucked aside until I meet the deadline.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
...not writing? I'm not sure I understand the question.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I remember writing a story about a horse; I remember more the story of a family dog dying and how sad they all were.
Who are your favorite authors?
Too many to answer. The Beowulf poet, Marie de France, Chaucer, the anonymous composers of the Icelandic sagas, Marlowe, Shakespeare, Behn, Blake, Austen, Charlotte Brontë, Mary Shelley, Dorothy Parker, Winifred Watson, Georgette Heyer, PG Wodehouse, Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler, Dorothy B. Hughes, Elizabeth Sanxay Holding, Patricia Highsmith, James M. Cain, Jim Thompson, Kurt Vonnegut, Elizabeth Hand, Clive Barker, Ramsey Campbell, Graham Joyce, Shirley Jackson, Lewis Carroll and on and on...
What do you read for pleasure?
I read a lot of non-fiction -- research on different time periods or author biographies or just any subject that sparks my interest (it may or may not be related to something I'm writing).
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in mid-Michigan, though we also have a cabin in the north (a very Finnish tradition). I spent a lot of time outdoors, playing sports or rambling through woods, or swimming and fishing in lakes and rivers. I was part of probably the last generation to grow up with such freedom -- we could hop on a bike, yell "Going for a ride!" as we flew past the kitchen and be gone for hours. I often say as a writer I have worked hard to overcome the handicap of a happy childhood, but I can't live without that same freedom today.
