Interview with Kurt Henderson

Published 2013-12-24.
What do you read for pleasure?
An anthology of H.P. Lovecraft's work.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Since I am still a "struggling" author, I use a free e-reader that is installed on my laptop.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Word of mouth. People who have given my book a chance really like the story. They tell someone else and it goes from there.
Describe your desk
Cluttered at the moment. We moved recently for my wife's new job and most of the "odds and ends" have made their way into my small office.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the Poconos. For me, it was a good thing not being near many distractions. I spent time climbing trees in the woods and making up adventures. When I really wanted to "travel," I would curl up with a book and be transported away.
When did you first start writing?
After reading "The Vampire Lestat" by Anne Rice when it first came out in paperback.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Well, my latest book is still in my head. It has to do with a suffering immortal who helps to maintain spectral / universal energies - or spirits if you like.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
The need to share the stories that swirl in my head.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords makes it easy to create the end result. I'm still working on the "professional" marketing piece but at least having an outlet for my work is very much appreciated!
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Taking the idea in my head to a finished product. As a man, it is the ability to create a life form of sorts.
What do your fans mean to you?
I appreciate the fact that they spent money to buy my book. I hope that they feel something after reading my book - in a positive manner that is.

In the end, I think that they provide the incentive for creating a work of art. It can be lonely writing and it can cause self -doubt...but if you know someone, even one person is out there waiting - it gives me the drive to sit at the keyboard and get the story onto paper.
Who are your favorite authors?
The answer for established writers would be Anne Rice, Dean Koontz, Stephen King, H.P. Lovecraft, Washington Irving, etc. I have also been inspired by multiple "single" authors over the years. I've picked a book off the shelf or box that sounded interesting and have found joy in that story. Even in books that were not truly my favorites, I always found a gem in the story line.

It's the same as watching a B or C-rate movie. There is always something in there that shines if you keep your eyes open for it.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My kids.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Working, family, and taking the dog for a walk.
