Interview with Kristina Howells
Published 2013-08-29.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Dunstable, a Market town 30 miles north of central London. This town was very inspirational as I wrote a lot of poetry, and my first book A Hatter Goes Mad based on the local football was published by the local publisher, who sadly no longer exists.
When did you first start writing?
I first started writing at the age of four. It started with poetry, and then short stories. It wasn't until I was at Brunel University did I start taking writing seriously.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The latest book I am currently working on is an historical romance. I really do not want to give away to much, as I want to keep an element of surprise.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
After several disasters with my publishers who went out of business, and the ease of being able to publish on line. It was this that motivated me to become an Indie Author, and I do not regret it.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
It has helped, it is a great platform to help one get started in the publishing world.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy is writing the end, after spending weeks and months involved in the story. Then finally seeing it on a readers platform, and people buying it, giving positive reviews, you know it has all been worth while.
What do your fans mean to you?
They mean a lot, I'm grateful to everyone who buys and reads my books, without them I wouldn't be still writing.
What are you working on next?
After the historical romance, I am thinking of doing a sequel to A Soul Apart. I am still plotting, and writing the outline of it. So next year watch out....
Who are your favorite authors?
My favourite authors are Enid Blyton, Maya Angelou and Scott Fitzgerald
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Work inspires me to get out of bed, without it I would still be in it.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I am not writing I go running once in a while, shopping and I play my violin in several orchestras, and music groups.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I discover the E books through other writers promoting their work, or looking through the smashwords home page, or my writer friends on Facebook give me links to their work, and a promotional copy so that I may read it for free and write a review.
What is your writing process?
Today I sit down at the computer and try to write the summary, then I start to write what I want to happen in each chapter. Then I start to research the characters, and their thought, personality, partners, lives and everything about them. This helps me then to start opening the story and getting swept up by them.
