Interview with Kristy K. James

Published 2016-06-24.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Honestly? I enjoy the Kindle reader on my computer the most, though I take my Kindle with me when traveling, spending time at a park/restaurant/coffee shop, or when I know I'll be waiting for a while for an appointment somewhere. As long as I've remembered to charge it, I'm happy. :)
What do you read for pleasure?
Of course, I read romance, but not just contemporary. I love time-travel stories, fantasy, some YA, and the occasional series that includes 'nice' vampires. I also enjoy a little fact-based historical fiction. As long as there isn't much violence (must be very mild) or gore (even milder), the odds are good that I'll at least try reading it.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I don't really do much marketing, but I've been pleased with the results of places like Bookbub and Booksends. But if you want to know the truth, just writing and publishing the next book - and the next and next and next seems to work the best.
Describe your desk
Danger, proceed with caution? Much as I wish I could say my desk was neat as a pin, I cannot. It's got stacks of index cards, notebooks, and other things I use to write and research. It's also where I keep a truckload of nutritional supplements because for me, out of sight is out of mind. If I don't keep them there, I forget to take them. :)
When did you first start writing?
An introvert from a very early age, I spent my time playing first with baby dolls, then paper dolls, then Barbie and Ken dolls - and then I got too old to play with any dolls. I've always believed that's why I started writing. I wasn't ready to give up the make believe worlds I could create when I was playing, but it wasn't until I took a ninth grade creative writing course that I really fell in love with storytelling. To be honest, I only took it because that's the class the school newspaper was produced in - and I knew I'd get to write at least a few of the stories. And one of the things I wanted to do was interview a student teacher I had a crush on. Alas, he turned out to be married but by then, I'd caught the 'writing bug' ... and it's something I'm glad to say I'm still 'infected' with it today.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Unfortunately, it was because a close family member died. 'They' had been encouraging me to give indie publishing a try for several years. It seemed like a good way to honor their memory and what they wanted for me. It also kept me very busy that first year, which wound up being a blessing in disguise.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has made publishing easy. Upload a book once, check the applicable options, and Smashwords takes care of getting the books to numerous other stores. It's hassle free. And I believe Mr. Coker truly cares about our success. He keeps up with what's going on in the industry, shares that information with us, and offers sound advice.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
This is a tough question. It's like asking me to choose a favorite kid, meal, movie, etc... There's joy in that first hint of a story. There's joy in the whole 'what if' process, in seeing characters come to life and a new story unfold before my eyes. There's joy in hearing from readers who love my heroes and heroines. It's impossible to single out one of them as the greatest because I love it all.

There's one thing I can definitely say is NOT a joy and that's editing. There's not much joy in editing. If writing could be compared with housecleaning, editing would be the bathroom. :)
What do your fans mean to you?
In a word ... everything. The fact that they gave me - an unknown - a chance never ceases to amaze me. That they love my characters - characters who feel like family to me - is totally awesome. And their kind words make me smile and fill my heart with warm fuzzies. They encourage me, motivate me, and make me want to tell the very best stories I can.
What are you working on next?
Technically, I'm currently working on four books. An eighth installment in the Coach's Boys series, a prequel for Enza, the second story in the Double M series, and the outline for a brand new series that takes place in a beach town based on a small town I visit fairly regularly.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Sort of, yes. It was in that ninth grade writing class I mentioned. I'd written two stories, but I can't remember which was first - the one about the man who made pancakes one morning and accidentally used shrinking powder (and he shrunk so much he disappeared), or the one about seventeen year old Erica and Micky. They fell in love and were later attacked by a jealous ex-boyfriend. They still wound up with their happily-ever-after though. I'm sad to say a friend who promised to illustrate the kids' book eventually owned up to throwing the only copy of it away, effectively ending our teenage friendship. As for the other, the handwritten manuscript was lost forever due to water damage in a storeroom about four years later. I may try to rewrite that one someday, though I'll make the characters a little older.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first one I remember reading as a kid was called Baby Island. I found it in the library at school and it was a story about young girls stranded on an island with several babies to look after. I really don't remember much about it other than the fact that the girls were very resourceful and I admired their courage. Because of them, I will someday write a story about a couple stranded somewhere. Not necessarily on an island, but somewhere that makes it hard to get back to civilization. Maybe there will even be a baby or two.
