Interview with Kimberly Schimmel

Published 2017-03-02.
What are you working on next?
I have in the notebooks a memoir of my years in the bridal industry as well as the beginnings of a story about rock and roll, adoption, and best friends. I also have some more knitting designs on the needles, including a sweater.
What is your writing process?
I write about what I already know. I just start thinking and write things down as if I am talking to a friend.
How do you approach cover design?
I love to design covers! For how-to books I begin with an image of a project, then choose the color scheme to complement it. With essays and poetry I begin with a color scheme or theme and find images to go with the theme.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
The Old Testament, for its great variety: poetry, history, prophecy. I love to read it in the King James Version for the beauty of the English.
The Lord of the Rings, because it's Tolkein!
Atlas Shrugged, because it is bluntly truthful.
Knitting Without Tears by Elizabeth Zimmerman, because she was part artist, part teacher, part engineer.
Anything written by Thomas Sowell, because he is brilliant.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I own a Kindle Fire.
Describe your desk
I am a visual person, so I use my desk as a storage unit. When I write, I spread papers, pictures, and samples all over a table so I can see how everything fits together.
