Interview with Laura E Simms

Published 2013-08-22.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Tamworth near Birmingham in the UK. It wasn't so much where I grew up as how I grew up
When did you first start writing?
When I was 6, just scribbles to start with
Who are your favorite authors?
Darren Shan, James Patterson, Elizabeth George
What do your fans mean to you?
I like to think they enjoy my books and I hope I inspire them in some way to get in touch with their own creative side
Your books are rather dark themed. Is there a reason for this?
I was born disabled so there is a different viewpoint, but as a child at school I was bullied and I found that the main reason for this was people's ignorance of my condition Cerebral Palsy. If people can be educated then maybe some other child won't have to go through the experience I did
Your dedications are quite select. Why is this?
They are people who supported or influenced me during my life in some way, I wasn't able to thank them at the time and now I can.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Lord Loss by Darren Shan, because no matter how mucked up things get you can always come out on top
Malory Towers, because the series takes me back to childhood
Famous Five by Enid Blyton because on the whole my childhood was a happy one
Private London by James Patterson because it's just genius
Grave Peril by Jim Butcher, he's just the master of suspense
What do you read for pleasure?
The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher. Harry Dresden is just a class of his own
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Kindle
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Word of mouth
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Getting ideas down and seeing them take shape. Muddled thoughts getting meaning
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Hanging out with my friends, they keep me sane and give me ideas. They've stuck with me through thick and thin and if I'm having a bad day I talk to my 3 and a half year old godson.
