Interview with Lee Ann Rubsam

What is your writing process?
Whether I am writing a book or an article, pretty much everything I write comes through prayer. I often ask the Lord, "What do You have for me to share with my readers?" As I spend time with the Lord, He drops ideas and details of how to communicate those ideas into my heart. I take extensive notes, and, as soon as possible, begin the actual writing. I find that if I begin an article or chapter while it is still a fresh, living idea, the thoughts flow well -- because the Lord Himself gives the insights for where to take the concepts which I am presenting.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book is "Before Whom We Stand: The Everyman's Guide to the Nature of God." I love to explore Who God is -- His character, and how that affects how He relates to people. Coupled with what the Bible has to say about God's nature, I've learned a lot about the Lord's dealings with people through some pretty difficult life experiences -- and I've found Him to be utterly trustworthy through it all.

But, besides loving to talk about His character, I've realized that there is a great need in our present day to reteach the biblical truths of Who God is to the Church -- because many people have not grown up with solid foundational teaching. They really don't know what we Christians believe about God. This book is a conversational, practical explanation of the Trinity and the particular roles of each of the Persons within the Trinity.
What are you working on next?
I've always got a lot of irons in the fire! Currently, I'm recording audio book versions of "The Intercessor's Companion" and "Before Whom We Stand." There is a Q & A for intercessors book planned for the not-too-distant future, which I hope will be a huge help to my fellow prayer warriors. I also have a couple of devotionals in progress -- one on the names of God and one which is geared toward intercessors/prophetic people. There aren't enough hours in the day to get them all done as quickly as I'd like!
When did you first start writing?
In my younger years, writing had its starts and stops, with other interests taking precedence in between. I was busy writing horse stories from about fourth through sixth grade, then as a young adult, spent a few years writing humor articles based on my everyday experiences. I still like to do humor writing, but unfortunately, do not have a lot of time to devote to it anymore. I started writing Christian character building materials for the homeschool community about eighteen years ago, and that has expanded into also writing about prayer and other Christian topics.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Obviously, the Bible is above all the rest. The KJV is still my favorite version. But five beyond that? Five is too few!

I love anything by Derek Prince, but due to my passion for intercessory prayer, "Secrets of a Prayer Warrior" would top the list.

I have learned tons from James Goll, and "The Prophetic Intercessor: Releasing God’s Purposes to Change Lives and Influence Nations" would probably be my favorite of his.

Lynne Hammond's "The Master is Calling" is a wonderful book on hearing the voice of God and praying out what we hear. Although I have never met her personally, she has been such a mentor to me through her writing.

Wesley Duewel has also had a huge impact on my prayer life, through his comprehensive guide to intercession, "Mighty Prevailing Prayer."

And then there is Dave Roberson's extensive study on praying in tongues, "The Walk of the Spirit -- The Walk of Power."

Each of these books has had tremendous impact on my life, and I am so grateful to these wonderful servants of God for sharing their understanding with the rest of us.
What do you read for pleasure?
I'm a bit of a Dickens and Austen fan, but in recent years have not had time to read much fiction -- but nonfiction which takes us closer to the heart of God (such as the favorites I have listed) can be pleasure reading too!
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I've always been an indie author -- originally because I wrote for a niche audience (homeschoolers). I had approached some major Christian publishers, but the response was usually to the effect of, "It's an interesting concept, but the audience is just too small."

I've never for one moment regretted self publishing. It gives me freedom to say what I need to say, without having someone tell me, "You have to say that differently," or, "We'll have to water that idea down to reach a wider audience." I've loved working through the whole book production process from beginning to end, interacting personally with many of my readers, even praying with some of them along the way. It has been a rewarding experience, to be allowed to touch their lives.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Wow. I would not have known how to produce an e-book without Smashwords. Thank you so much! I deal directly with a couple of other e-book distributors, but the books I submit to them have to pass the Smashwords test of looking good before I upload to them. The style guide you provide to authors is so clearly written and so helpful.
How do you approach cover design?
I spend quite a bit of time turning ideas around in my mind for what kind of cover would complement the book itself. Sometimes, as with the actual writing, I get a basic idea for a cover through prayer.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Knowing that I am encouraging people and impacting their lives for the better.
What do your fans mean to you?
I really enjoy talking with each one who contacts me, whether they are expressing their appreciation for my materials, or whether I'm answering their questions, or praying with them for their needs.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I spend a great deal of time in prayer. I also teach seminars and workshops on prayer and the prophetic gifts.
