Interview with Lakshmi Menon

Published 2015-04-03.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Many of my short stories, children’s stories and articles had been published in print magazines and online, but only a single book for the kids was published with a traditional publisher. In addition, I had many half-finished stories and novels lying with me. When the Indie revolution came I completed them one by one and I thought it as the best opportunity for me to self publish them, instead of waiting for months and years to hear from the traditional publishers.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords provide us not only a great platform to publish our work, they also teach us step by step how to format our books and publish them correctly. Besides, their marketing strategy to various outlets give us a wonderful opportunity to make our books available to a wider readership.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love creating different characters and the situations for them, and then reaching to them.
What are you working on next?
I am working on a suspense story now which has also an element of romance in it.
Who are your favorite authors?
I have many favorite authors belonging to different genre, and at different stages of my life. They are Rabindranath Tagore, R.K. Narayan, Ruskin Bond, Paulo Coelho, Danielle Steel, Daphne Du Maurier, Jhumpa Lahiri, Khaled Housseini, Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni, Bill Bryson and more.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I discover the ebooks through twitter friends.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, I still remember that. The first story I wrote in my teenage days was in my local language. I was inspired by a teenage girl who had to take care of her family by begging, which later I published on my website titled “Health Vs Wealth,” after some modification. Four years ago, I was contacted for permission to use the story in a text book for school children.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I use kindle to read my ebooks.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing when I was 13 or 14 years old.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a tiny village of the beautiful land of Kerala, a southern most State of India. The natural beauty of the place, the people I had met there, the books of famous writers in my regional language (Malayalam) I read in my early age, have a great influence in many of my stories. After my teenage days, I had moved to the neighboring state Karnataka where I started reading more English books. The life experience, the people, the books I had read there, and the various travels I had made have also contributed a lot to my writing.
