Interview with Linda Sacco

What motivated you to become an indie author?
I approached several traditional publishers with my manuscript for Dog Breeds: Which is Your Perfect Pet? and I felt they were taking my idea into a hundred different directions I did not want to go. As an indie author, I have complete control over my work.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
The reason for my success is Smashwords and their connection to retailers such as Apple and Barnes and Noble. All hail Smashwords!
What are your writing tips?
Get educated about writing. Sign up for a course, attend a writing session at your local library and/or writers festival, read how-to books about the writing process and the particular type of writing you are interested in. Books that have helped me include Writing Fiction by Garry Disher and Writing Young Adult Fiction for Dummies by Deborah Halverson.
Also read books that are the same genre as the one you are writing and critique them. What is going to make yours different from the current crop?
Join a writing group so you can get feedback about your work.
Make time to write. Set a goal.
Always be prepared to write in public. My best poems have been written in public places. Don't wait to get home - that idea might be gone by then!
Research is not just for non-fiction writers! If you're writing fiction that include real locales strong research will help bring the place to life and therefore make a more convincing story.
Don't give up.
Enjoy it!
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Kindle.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
In writing non fiction, I enjoy getting to learn more about a topic that I am passionate about. I love the escape and creativity involved in writing fiction and poetry. Writing and selling books that people enjoy reading is a thrill!
What are you working on?
I have headed back into creative writing! Again, the concept of selecting the right pet has inspired my work on a children's fiction book.
I've also taken a detour into poetry. Read my poem 'Worlds Colliding' http://deadsnakes.blogspot.com.au/2014/06/linda-sacco-poem.html
My plan is to continue adding new titles to the Which is Your Perfect Pet? series.
