What do you read for pleasure?
I read all kinds of writing from historical fiction to self help and inspirational material. The last book I read was "The Traveler's Gift" by Andy Andrews - loved it! I love to reading and writing mystery combined with romance. As a sailor in the US Navy, I read all of Sydney Sheldon's and Lawrence Sanders' books amongst others of the same type - sex power and money! (Hey, I was a kid)
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I find the things I read through friends, social media and surfing the Internet but I prefer recommendations.

What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Well, this is the first book hitting the market for me. However, I do have a couple of others that will follow very soon. With marketing in my background from another life, I will employ a variety of techniques. With Six Steps to Transformation I will give away a very important sample from the book to groups and organizations that would find this most useful. From there, I believe anyone benefitting from this chapter from the book will want to purchase the full book. The key is in getting groups to glance at this subject matter of "How to Find Your Purpose".
Describe your desk
Right now, my desk consists of a TV tray for my keyboard and a behind the sofa table for my monitor. Awkward but it works well for a number of reasons, mostly convenience.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Detroit Michigan in the seventies and went into the Navy a few years after graduating high school. It was during my years in the Navy that I became a fan of writing. Totally by accident, I found out that if you wanted a letter from anyone, you had better write them. and I did. I would write several letters a day and sometimes send a self addressed envelop with blank paper to encourage the recipient to write back immediately. There was rarely a day that I didn't have mail coming in from somewhere.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Six Steps to Transformation was never intended to be a book. Decades after a stint in the Navy and having tried to write many books, I decided I should try writing about something I knew well. I was going through a lot at the time in figuring out what was next in life and I decided to write about how I made a major change in life at 33 years of age. It's a long story but while writing it, I realized there where 6 very specific things that I had done to make this change possible at the time. The book wasn't intended to publish, as I said, but a few people picked it up and thought it could really help someone. My thoughts were that there were plenty of such books out there but here it is, in the midst of me going through a similar step program myself.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Before I considered writing, I wanted to know what i was getting into and researched the market and found that it was a rare case to get picked up a publisher these days. I didn't want to spend my time finding a publisher, I just wanted to write stories. This was the easier way and I figured if I could become a best seller in Hawaii with every book I published, maybe I could pick a publisher instead of fighting for one!
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Easy. They make it very easy. This is a very uncomplicated process and your book gets out there. But I too realize that books sell because the author gets them out there and makes it happen. Smashwords takes eBook distribution out of my hands easily, painlessly, so I can spend time writing or promoting them.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I think seeing others enjoy my writing. Just after writing the first draft of "Moon Over Maui, an art gallery coworker asked to read it. The next day he came in weary and pissed. He glared at me and said, "It's because of you". "What, what did I do?" I responded. "I was up all night trying to finish that book, it was so damn good, I had to know who the bad guys were..." That was the first time I'd written fiction and I was excited because I started with every intention of making it a page turner.
What do your fans mean to you?
Fans are my inspiration, they tell me if I'm doing okay or not. I took a long time to bring my writing out of the closet from the fear of being judged. The supportive fans gave me courage to keep going. But I realize that plan could backfire too! I write from my heart and I just hope that people can feel my heart. I write for myself, there is great deal of satisfaction in it for me but the fans are those that keep me going.
What are you working on next?
I have blocked out about 6 or 7 other books that I'm ready to go with, now that Six Steps is out of the door. However, being an observer of the state of the world, I feel drawn to write about issues of the day in a meaningful way. I would rather write to inspire at this time though there is nothing like a good romantic mystery. I'll edit Moon Over Maui and get that out before I start another book and then there is the important book about my personal journey into emancipation that I must write for so many others who have had to endure so much pain in the same way but without the ability to travel and find truth not as available to them here.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I love spending time in nature. Living on Maui allows me to immerse into ocean water activities, hiking in forests (wet & draw). More than anything, I like to travel into different cultures and lands that will forever change me. Not much of a TV watcher, I will follow some events that effect us all.
