Interview with Luken Du Pont

Published 2014-05-06.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Yes, the first story which comes to mind is a very popular children's book I had the privilege of reading in 4th Grade. "The BFG" by Roald Dahl. I was already intrigued with any thing fictional, from monster's to super hero's but the BFG gave me a new light on how a young boys imagination can run free thanks to the help of a book.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Warrior of Rome-Harry Sidebottom
Cleopatra's Daughter-Michelle Moran
Nefertiti-Nick Drake
Dune series-Frank Herbert
Enders Game- Orson Scott Card
I love Science-fiction and fantasy almost as much as I love Fictional Historical Novels.
What do you read for pleasure?
I'm an avid comic book reader and Like fictional ancient literature as well.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Since it is my first book I have not done a lot marketing yet. But I presume the best marketing techniques would be social media outlets and sites such as Smashwords, were authors can get their books out there for low or no cost.
Describe your desk
Smack right in the centre is my laptop, around it a pile of comic books and some of my Favourite fictional titles, and honestly most have already been read but are still lying there.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a small town called Manzini, Swaziland. A country in South Africa bordering Mozambique. Id say the privilege of growing up in such a lovely environment with green open fields and luscious forests as far as the eye can see had a major impact on my personality and heavily affected my writing style.
When did you first start writing?
I began writing five years ago after an Idea came to me, I could not just let it only be an idea and had to let it grow. So I put it on paper and after a year I had a 100 000 word book.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Northern Exposure has been in the works for two years now. I began writing it knowing exactly how I wanted it, from beginning to end. Knowing all the characters and the plot, But it has taken on a life of its own, and page after page it just can not stop growing.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
It is a place where I can allow my imagination the space to run free, there is so much I want to share, so many different characters and scenes I want to become a reality. Especially knowing that my fans will come to love Northern Exposure as much as I do
What do your fans mean to you?
They mean everything to me, in my day job I am a professional athlete so I know the people who love your work are the ones who determine your success.
What are you working on next?
Northern Exposure is a trilogy so keep an eye out for book two and three.

They say all wounds heal in time, but what if the scars left behind are so deeply embedded into ones psyche they play as a constant reminder to the distrust inflicted. What if pain is all you see when you look into their eyes, what if people you held so close to your heart are now as estranged as the ideas of happiness in this distrustful place? Is that what it had eventually come to.
