Interview with Lietha Wards

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I was born in Lahr Germany, on an Airforce base to Canadian parents. I had an older brother who had a fantastic imagination and used to make-believe things for us to do. We moved back to Canada on the West coast of British Columbia when I was two, and then all the way to the East Coast to Nova Scotia when I was six. In between we moved a lot. It was the life of an Armed Forces child. We would move before we made close friends. This led us (my two brothers and I) to become close and we did a lot of adventuring together. Life was never boring.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing after the birth of my first boy. I was an at home mom at the time, and always had a vivid imagination (according to my mother) so I bought a typewriter, and started writing "Immortal Promise" in 1989. Although I didn't publish it until 2012
What's the story behind your latest book?
I'm currently writing a few, but the hockey romances are some of my favorties. My father did the ice for the German olympic team when we were stationed in Germany and he played for his team on the Armed forces base. When we moved back to Canada, he'd completed a degree in physical Ed. and ran the Civic Center, which housed the hockey arena among other sports, but he LOVED hockey, so I was raised around it. As soon as we were old enough to wear skates we were in the club. As a child I grew up around the hockey jocks (yes, I know, not appropriate for a female child) However, my father was the manager of the arena so it was easy to take his kids to work. We played in the back rooms, the catwalks and the employee only areas. I look back on it and think "Wow" none of the other employees ever said anything to us. Apparently my father wasn't an easy man to challenge :)
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I do have a fulltime job. Being an author is a hobby but I would love to do it fulltime. I absolutely love the feedback from my readers (I really don't want to say 'fans' because I really don't think I'm that fantastic) It is what they say in the letters and emails I get that inspire me the most. I mean that from the heart. I do have my critics too, but I've learned to take what they say and try to improve.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Ha, great question! Though I really don't see myself as successful, I'd have to say the exposure has been fantastic. I've met some wonderful people through Smashwords, and the format makes it a dream to upload your work.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The readers!!!! What else can I say. They are my true inspiration.
What do your fans mean to you?
As I said, I don't believe I have fans, but readers. Fans make it sound like I'm a celebrity and I'm not. Writing is a passion, a way of expressing my intimate thoughts, and if people enjoy it, I'm very happy.
What are you working on next?
Well, as an author you always have a million ideas in your head, but you need to focus on one or two. I have a few almost done books (very difficult because I do work fulltime) I have a historical supernatural, another of the 'Rush' series, and my readers are begging me for Lance and Tammy's story.
Who are your favorite authors?
Well, I have weird array, so lets get this going; Stephen King, Wes Craven, Robert Ludlum, Diana Palmer, Johanna Lindsey, and Alfred Hitchcock, to name a few. I know, I may just have a sinister side.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My job, and paying the bills (laughs out loud) I actually have a small hobby farm with a bunch of animals that just seemed to show up at my doorstep including a sassy Arabian that came from an abusive past. I go out every morning to spoil my horses before work. I also have some rabbits that showed up after someone tried to throw them away. They kind have taken over the place. Between the rabbits and the horses, with the price of gas, I have really cheap lawn mowers.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Besides working, which I covered, I also look after my mother. She moved in with us about fifteen years ago after the death of my amazing older brother to cancer. I figured she gave us an amazing childhood, so she deserves some taking care of too!
