Interview with Lynny Prince

Published 2016-04-25.
What is your writing process?
I have gotten into outlining, which is a great way to organize your thoughts. It has helped me move forward with three books, and gives a sense of accomplishment that I can't get from writing as I go.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Not the first story, but the one that influenced me the most was a time travel book called Under a Prairie Moon by Madeline Baker. Reading her books as a teen made me want to be a writer. Although I write thrillers now, those paranormal/romance/time travel novels were a huge influence.
How do you approach cover design?
I try to make a statement that reflects the story. My first cover used a painting called Founding Fathers by David Behrens. The story is about Native Americans taking back their land, so the painting of four famous Native American chiefs in the clouds over Mount Rushmore was perfect. The licensing fee was well worth the price because everyone knew that famous painting.
What do you read for pleasure?
I am constantly reading about how to improve my craft. That is pleasure to me. If I do read anything else, it is biographies or Stephen King, history and all things paranormal.
Describe your desk
Organized chaos!
When did you first start writing?
At age 12 I wrote my first story called McGregor's Farm. I don't know where the name came from, but I still have the original!
What motivated you to become an indie author?
It is extremely difficult to break into the publishing business. I went the traditional route and even hired an attorney, but got tired of shelling out money while my manuscript sat in no man's land. I took the bull by the horns and started marketing myself and sold 1000 copies of my first novel before it was published. I then signed with a small press and they published me, but I was not making the kind of money I knew was possible. My first novel is now with another small press, but as soon as that contract is up, I will re-publish it myself and will not sign with anyone else again. Independent publishing is the way to go. No middle man, no hassle, and I can do things my way!
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Going anywhere and being anyone I want.
What do your fans mean to you?
They are everything! Without the fans, there would be no Lynny Prince! Many have become trusted friends. I ALWAYS make time for my fans!
What inspired your latest book "An Open Letter to My Abuser"?
As an adult survivor of abuse, I needed a voice and giving a voice to others was important to me. Whether you've been abused, or are still in a bad situation, I hope this book serves as a beacon of hope for all who read it. You can change your life. We are all victors, not victims.
