Interview with Marika Costa

Published 2013-09-30.
What are you working on next?
I am working on the next book in the Learning Jungle series.
Who are your favorite authors?
I have very eclectic tastes in reading, so do not have one favorite author. I tend to choose my reading material by interest rather than by author.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Reading--it is my entertainment, my comfort, my enjoyment and my source of information. Besides that I enjoy walking and socializing---Book Club, Bookless Club (discussion group), women's groups, getting together with friends.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I have been writing since I was a young child. Early on, my secondary school English teacher encouraged me to write a short story for a contest. Even though I did not win, I quite enjoyed the process, so i continued.
What do you read for pleasure?
I enjoy good mysteries--not the blood and gore kind--the ones that require deductive reasoning. I pit myself against the plot line to see if I can solve the mystery before the end of the book. I also enjoy books that explore character development, as opposed to action, fantasy or adventure.
Describe your desk
I am a highly organized and neat person, so my desk reflects that. It is clear of everything except what I am currently working on--and the tools I need for the task at hand. One aspect of my profession as a Learning Specialist is to assist students to organize in a way that is compatible with their learning profile--and I practice what I teach.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My book is an educational parenting book designed to empower parents to assist their children to learn more effectively. It is based on what I have gleaned from my years in the education system and then in private practice as a Learning Specialist.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Sharing my passion! I believe in the uniqueness--the individuality of each and every child. That is the core belief that is central to all my Learning Jungle series educational parenting books. Learning should always be approached from that core belief rather than the "one size fits all" way of thinking so prevalent in many learning methods.
