Interview with Michael Wright

Published 2014-10-03.
What do you read for pleasure?
Everything. I love to read good horror, thriller and speculative fiction. Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Ted Dekker, Joe Hill, all those guys. I like some John Grisham too, but if it's got strong characters and a good story, I'll read it.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Kindle Touch, although the Fire is nice, and way more functional in some ways - the touch simulates the written page better and I don't get distracted by Facebook that way.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
By what interests me. I read the synopsis, and if it doesn't interest me, I don't bother. I tend to follow authors a bit - if they're good once or twice, they usually can be good more times.
Who are your favorite authors?
Easy: Ted Dekker, Frank Peretti, Stephen King, Dean Koontz, John Grisham, Justin Cronin, and Joe Hill.
Describe your desk
A godforsaken mess. But it works for me, it usually has a cold drink, and a snack nearby when I'm writing.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in three different states, which gave me a good taste for different flavors in life and culture. Going from deep south to Alaskan north and then east coast back to deep south was a good trip all the way around for me. You meet a lot of people that way.
When did you first start writing?
When I was a kid, I think twelve. I always loved stories, but I tried some things then and didn't really get into it until I was about fifteen. And that all sucked until I was about eighteen.
What is your writing process?
Find the character, step into his shoes, then start throwing all of the worst crap I can at him and see what he does.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Letting a story tell itself. That, to me, is so much fun. I don't like to sit at my desk and make a story happen, I like for the story to come running out of me and it's like I'm reading it as it's being written. If I don't like it, I don't finish it, because I know nobody else will want to read it.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I spend it watching TV, reading and talking with my wife. I work full time and am faithful at church, so writing has back seat in a some ways, but its still a lot of fun.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Um...fiction at least, The Stand by Stephen King is a masterpiece of character, pacing and expanse. The Grapes of Wrath by Steinbeck is an amazing, breathtaking piece of work, Everyone should read it. The Great Gatsby by Fitzgerald is amazing, haunting and beautiful. Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz, a real page-turner and a sweet story. The Oath by Frank Peretti would be another. It was a book that proved to me Christian Fiction didn't have to be lame.
What are you working on next?
Good question. I've got a few things on the burner. A good exorcism horror novel, a novella about a spooky hotel, a horror/sci-fi crossover and currently a thriller short story that should be out soon.
