Interview with Dr. Michael Monroe Kiefer

What is your writing process?
I start thinking about a concept to write about. Then I jot down notes on specific topics within the concept. This builds my table of contents. Then I create 3-4 bullet points for each topic, creating the chapter modular outline. Then I research or have already researched each module. When I actually go to write the chapter text for each bullet point, much of it is automatic writing or "flow" from my subconscious mind. I write freehand for hours, then type it up and edit later. My approach uses two systems. First, writing in short modules and second, from subconscious flow. After I think for weeks or years on a topic and do the specific research. The actual text flows from my mind to paper! The table of contents takes the longest amount of time. Figuring out chapter titles and organizing the information. Once the information is organized the writing of the text is automatic for me. I build my seminars the same way, all made from short modules. Then when I deliver the seminar, nothing is memorized. The words flow, when I speak. I work from modular outlines.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
No. But I remember the first story I wrote. I wrote it in second or third grade titled "A Trip to the Moon". I just sat in class and wrote it automatically from start to finish and turned it in at the end of class. I got an A and a gold star and the teacher said it was amazingly creative. My mom loved it too. It is the only fiction story I ever wrote.
How do you approach cover design?
I study a lot of artwork and look at catchy book covers. I study why art catches my attention, then try to get that aspect captured in my covers. I am big on symbolism on my covers too. The cover needs to send a message. Then I hand draw a sketch and work with a local oil painter to bring my sketch to life. The cover of Superconscious Power is from an original oil painting by Guy Smith. I commissioned Guy to make a painting from my sketch. I have the original oil painting he did for me in my office. My daughter Ariel did an oil painting in high school and I am going to use that for the cover of my next book. I also have a local computer graphics artist I work with. I usually have a concept in mind and have artists make it from that.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Hands down number one with a bullet...Law of Success by Napoleon Hill. In his day he was the master researcher of success principles. His research and study of successful people and meticulous documentation of their methods is remarkable. My first book, The Powermind System is modeled from Law of Success. Second is, Outwitting the Devil, also by Hill. He crystalized what is happening in our society and why most people are failures in life with that book. Third, The Strangest Secret by Earl Nightingale. He introduced me to the law of attraction in that work. Fourth, Power of Will by Dr. Frank Channing Haddock, his work introduced me to the external powers of the mind. Fifth, The Power of Your Subconscious Mind by Dr. Joseph Murphy, he introduced me to subconscious power. I am a student of these men and many others like them. They all helped build my life and my life philosophy. I am a product of their teachings.
What do you read for pleasure?
My pleasure reading is my work reading. I love reading about human potential, ESP, mind power, supernatural real life experiences of people. I started reading this type of material long before writing about it and doing seminars on it.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Laptop
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Selling books at my seminars and workshops. Almost all of my sales are from that or because someone heard me speak and then told a friend to get my books.
Describe your desk
Laptop in center, hardcopy, old school, paper month at a glance planner in a black leather binder on my left, cell phone sits on top of the planner, old school calculator sits to the right of the laptop, blue pen next to that with a notepad. That's it, 6 items. Sometimes I remove the planner and phone. Almost all of my work is done on a laptop.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in upstate New York, Finger Lakes Region. Mostly rural agricultural areas. It influences my living, not my writing. I never lived in a big city, except for college and have no desire to do so. I like farms, fields, gardens, lakes, streams, woods, etc. This relaxes me. It is how I was raised. I am not a big city guy. I live in the agricultural area of Minnesota. My house is surrounded by corn and soybean fields with some woods.
When did you first start writing?
Early 1990's with my Powermind System research.
What's the story behind your latest book?
People asked me to do a scientific study on ESP and psychic power to see if there was any truth to it. So I did and found out there is scientific data supporting that people have mental capacities that extend beyond their physical body and that can be controlled, enhanced and used to help achieve life goals. I wrote about our research findings and teach people how to use their powers in the Superconscious Power book.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Speed. I can write and publish faster. More books to the market quicker.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
A great new avenue for people to access my work. Makes it fast and easy for my seminar participants to immediately buy and download my books before they leave.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
When people give me feedback and tell me how my books helped them in their life.
What do your fans mean to you?
This is the reason I write. I already know all of the information that I write about and more. I am trying to teach and help others with my books, so they know what I know. My mission is to teach and help other people. My writing is an extension of my mission.
What are you working on next?
Audiobooks so people can listen to me anytime they wish. Learning through listening. I am a professional speaker first, writer second.
Who are your favorite authors?
Napoleon Hill, Dr. Frank Channing Haddock, Dr. Joseph Murphy, Melvin Powers, Brian Tracy, Jim Rohn, Earl Nightingale
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
An opportunity to have a positive impact on other peoples lives. I try to do this everyday with everyone I contact.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Motivational Speaking is my main business.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
