Interview with Emmanuel Obi, Jr

Published 2016-07-07.
When did you first start writing?
One of my uncles bought me a ridiculously old computer - so old that it had a switch to turn it on not a button. It ran MSDOS. So yeah, pretty old. It was at my grandmother's house on top of an old model (antique in a way) record player. A wooden record player that had long since stopped working and was the size of large writing desk.

I was in about fourth grade and whenever my mom, sister and I would go to my grandmother's, which was pretty much every Saturday and Sunday, I would write. The first story was called "Creature of the Night" a werewolf in a town. I don't remember the exact plot but at some point the military created their own werewolf with a chip in his head to fight this werewolf but the modified werewolf fell off a cliff and into the ocean which screwed up his chip and made him evil as well . . . As I am typing this I am laughing at the imagination of 10 year old me.

However, I really got into writing at this point and loved doing it, in all forms, ever since.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Currently, I am working on the sequel to my first collection of short stories "Bruce Howard: Gentleman with Brass Knuckles". The main character is a private investigator and each story centers around a different case. I wanted it to be "toilet reading". Take a break and read a quick story.

I actually added a twist at the very end of the first book and the beginning of this sequel that has taken the character into a direction that I am really excited about.

I can't wait until I'm finished.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Very simply, I am impatient and did not want to wait six months for a response from a publisher. Once I started publishing online I realized that it was a much more direct contact to readers and a great way to get input.
What do your fans mean to you?
When I find a few I will let you know ;-)
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
When you have a concept that is just flowing out of you and there is a moment, like being in a zone, when it feels like you will never stop writing. Everything is coming together perfectly and it feels serendipitous.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
In terms of hobbies, I love film making. It's all low-budget and terrible but it's great. It all started with wanting to do more with my writing and with film making I can produce the film, write the script and direct.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Tremendously. My stories have been distributed all over the internet and I have been able to receive great reviews. There are great tools and analytics that I can use to track progress and determine what readers are leaning towards.

My only wish is that Smashwords analysis would show the author in what parts of the world the books are being downloaded.
