Interview with Patty Ann

What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Words and weaving them together to paint a picture that someone can relate to, but mostly learn from.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Walking and exploring new trails with my dog. Riding and caring for my horses. Looking in my garden to see what new vegetable has sprouted. Road trips. Reconnecting with old friends. Making new friends. This is what relaxes me as I spend 85% of my time writing.
How do you approach cover design?
I'm convinced the cover is what sells a book. As a former Graphic Artist I like to use strong visuals. Color, and particularly a picture, relays the mood of a book. I especially like using reverse type on dark backgrounds to make highlight words pop. An inviting, succinct title will capture the audience and appeal to their sense to investigate, then buy. I do admit some of my covers are in transition. If a book remains unsold the cover AND title might change. Covers evolve as their history unfolds. The bottom line equals audience appeal.
What do you read for pleasure?
Although I LOVE to read, these days I am primarily writing my own books. When I do take time out, books I enjoy are based on real life stories/situations; autobiographies, but not necessarily from famous people; informative, self-help, and learning guides; and well written fiction that won't let me put the book down.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Believe it or not I do not own any e-reading device!
Describe your desk
It's my lap. All work is done on my laptop with my legs perched up across another chair. Comfy!!
When did you first start writing?
My sixth grade teacher, a nun with bright red hair, was the first person who instilled in me a love for creating word structures to paint a narrative picture. From there I have written a variety of genres: educational, instructional, technical, nonfiction, and most recently, fiction.
What's the story behind your latest book?
"Navaho Nights" was inspired by the southwest, spirituality, serendipity, and life passages. It is my first fiction romance, which wrote itself taking on a life of its own. "Navaho Nights" was liberating for me after all the structured non fiction and instructional books that I had written. This fictitious book reflects much of this pent up freedom. The ability to embellish, dramatize, alter, and amend characters and situations was truly an exercise in fun. Consequently the result became a sensually seductive, yet sophisticated read for the discerning.

My latest, and second fiction, "Cowboy from Drewsey" integrates profound life transitions inside a heartwarming romance. Contemporary living issues-- namely online dating sites, coupled with my love for the rugged outback of central eastern Oregon was what stirred my imagination to create this book. My affinity for synchronized happenstances and extrasensory abilities are also apparent and are merged inside both novels. Making sense of- and linking to other dimensional events from this here and now life, are lessons freely shared. With a flare bent for the unusual my story lines interlock intrigue within a stimulating plot.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
This is a no contest question for this indie author. For one, it's the ability to forge my own corner. Years ago I wrote a group of life skills books and posted them on my own website. The site sold my books as online courses to schools. I was way before my time on this. The online books initially took off, but then 9-11 happened, and poof! school funding evaporated. It gutted my new industry in the making. I put the books away, waiting for a day when this type of platform gave birth permanently.

Over the years a few publishers got wind of my work and aimed to represent me, but promises faded. Some inquiry letters were sent out, but that was futile too. So I waited. The last few years with sites like Smashwords has opened up a huge market for those of us seeking our spot to be seen. It is a lot of work and dedication, but I love to write. The competition is fierce, yet readers make it an equal playing ground. The big plus is when your products sell, more of the proceeds go into your own pocket. What's not to like?
