Interview with Pierre Bougie, Sr

Published 2013-08-30.
When did you first start writing?
I began writing when I was about 18 years old. I was a great fan of hunting and fishing and I wrote some articles in local newspapers of Montreal
What's the story behind your latest book?
It took me 30 years to write that one! L'Affaire Delma was a project that I started back in 1980. But I had to work in home renovations and tile setting to pay the bills, so writing was a secondary thing for me at that time. It is only when I decided to retire that I found more time to write. So I got back to the project and changed many things with the plot. I wanted this first book to focus on Justice and that led me to decide on writing a trilogy.

So the first novel mainly serves as a presentation of the main characters: Joseph Quito and his partner Marco Tozzi, both inspectors for the "Sûreté du Québec", our provincial police here in Quebec, Canada. Both men try to solve the triple murder of Nadine Delma, a bitch who was a pro at conning her lovers and getting money from them. Revenge, jealousy and hatred are what cause her death but the intrigue is hard to solve because of the three different causes of death occurring on the same day...

The solution of this crime isn't what I was focusing on. I put more emphasis on my main character's need for true Justice - getting the really guilty one to pay for his or her crime. So it is a moral and psychological combat going on in Joe Quito's head all the time. Too bad the book is in French only at this time... Or too bad the interview has no French option.

What motivated you to become an indie author?
Ah! That's an easy one! First of all, it was a question of keeping full control over the entire process. I had offers from standard publishers, but they wanted me to let them handle everything. The other reason was a financial one. Traditional publishers will only let you have between 10% to 20% of the retail selling price as the author of your book. Here at Smashwords.com I can get as much as 85% on the electronic version of my book!
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans are the ones for whom I write! Without any fans, writing is a useless occupation. I really love interaction with my readers; I want to know what they think of my characters and how they see a story unfold as they read it. Would they have preferred a different ending? Would they like me to change how a character reacts to certain situations? Do they enjoy a little sex in my books, or do they prefer me to stay away from sexy situations? It is always interesting to hear what your fans think about your writing.
What are you working on next?
I'm already into the second book of the trilogy. The title to this second novel should be "Les Sept", as it is written in French. I am about 70% done with the first writing. I intend to get this second book written, edited and processed for March of 2014. I'm sure this novel will make the first take off in sales, as this one I wrote in a continuous state of mind, sort of. I may not be finished writing, but the book's plan is complete. So it is just a matter of time before the whole process gets done.

Les Sept will have Joe Quito and Marco Tozzi work on cold cases involving pedophiles, whom are known to be guilty of terrible crimes on children, but nobody has enough evidence to get those bastards convicted in court. With the help of billionaire Mr. Bell (the father of Joe's girlfriend Kimberly Bell) Joe and Marco will get these seven men to pay for their crime in a very unusual way!
Who are your favorite authors?
I'm a fan of thrillers, detective stories, true crime and such... So my favorite authors are (in no particular order):
Michael Connelly, Jeffery Deaver, Mo Hayder, Stieg Larsson, James Patterson, Patricia MacDonnald, Kathy Reichs, Jean-Jacques Pelletier, Ann Rule, Fred Vargas, Dan Brown and many more...
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Life! I am always happy to wake up and live a new day, especially if the sun is shining outside! I like to garden, walk my dog, enjoy a great dinner with my wife, light up a great fire in the fireplace in the winter months. I am a Rosicrucian and I learned to enjoy each day, In fact, I enjoy each minute in each day! Of course, writing now is one of the most important occupation that I live for and I intend to go at it for many mores years!
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes... I used to write erotica fiction stories, for specialty US magazines. Most of those are mentioned on my website, on the English side at http://www.pierrebougie.com (Yes, I did write in English! but my mother language is French) I really enjoyed writing short stories!
What is your writing process?
I don't have any special agenda for my writing. When inspiration comes, I sit down at the computer and start writing. Other times, I say to myself: "Okay, it's raining outside, nothing else to do and your book needs to go forward, my man..." So I take out my notebook, sit in front of the fireplace and get back into the writing mode. It usually doesn't take me too long to start getting inspiration flowing again, since I have a plan already written down.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first book I ever read was by Jules Verne: 1000 lieues sous les mers. (1000 leagues under the sea) That got me interested in reading for the rest of my life!
