Interview with Zach Foster

Published 2013-10-08.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I remember my mother reading me "The Day the Goose Got Loose." A very unruly goose breaks out of his pen on a farm and proceeds to raise hell wherever he goes. Total obnoxious hilarity and anarchy ensued. I thought it was the greatest thing ever!
How do you approach cover design?
I either take my own photos or find images online either in the public domain or under a Creative Commons license. I then use software to make a snazzy cover that's good looking and relevant to the book topic.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
1) The Bible - I'm a convert and its lessons of service to God and unconditional love for ALL mankind have made a positive impact in my life. 2) Atlas Shrugged - This must be THE BEST novel ever written. 3) The Great Gatsby - The great American novel outlines our society's moral corruption: fake people pretending to be somebody. 4) The Revolution (by Ron Paul) - This book showed me how my previous worldview rested entirely on quicksand. 5) The Lord of the Rings - One of the most epic novels ever written!
What do you read for pleasure?
I read a bit of EVERYTHING! Novels (classics and contemporary fiction), economics books, political ideas, studies of theology, and anything else people throw at me that seems interesting.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have a basic Nook Simple Touch. Best $80 I ever spent!
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Hitting up dozens of Facebook groups with thousands of people who think the way I do, as well as pitching my projects to Blog Talk Radio hosts
Describe your desk
It's got two wooden drawers on one side and the top surface is glass. It looks very modern.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a mountainside California suburb called San Dimas. Living in a nice little town helped give me a stable core and a love for my family, friends, and the land--sentiments I like to show in my writing.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing little stories in the second grade. I published my first story at the age of 17, and I got serious about writing when I was 22.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My upcoming book is called "DON'T PISS ME OFF! Libertarian Republican Rants and Raves." I offer dozens of essays and editorials offering political insights and ideas.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
The publishing industry, like the film and music industries, is incredibly corporatized and stacked against the individual writer. Thankfully, technology allows indie authors like myself to blaze our own trails.
