It differs depending on the story. Sometimes, it's chaotic with bubble sheets, charts, and writing on my mirror (which works like a white board). Other times, it's simpler: an open document and endless amounts of typing with linear ideas. For a story with a ton of side plots, it's usually the first one. My husband can always tell when I'm plotting a new idea, because our bedroom is transformed into a strange workshop where chaos equals organization.
