Interview with Brenda B. Taylor

Published 2014-04-22.
What do you read for pleasure?
I usually read historical fiction, inspirational fiction, or inspirational non-fiction. I enjoy the historical facts and events coming to life in the fiction novels. I also enjoy historical romance. Many authors spend a lot of time researching their novels and giving their readers a glimpse of the past.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I read ebooks on an iPad or iPhone with the Kindle, Nook or iBooks application. I also enjoy listening to some of the books with Audible.
Describe your desk
I have a very nice office with a computer desk and chair, a file cabinet full of materials, and organizers everywhere, but I like to sit in a chair beside a window overlooking bird feeders and my laptop computer on a lap desk.
When did you first start writing?
I began writing in grade school, but life got in the way. Only after retirement was I able to fulfill the dream of becoming a published author.
What's the story behind your latest book?
After engaging in genealogical research and finding my family roots, I desired to write a story about the extraordinary lives of the ordinary people in my lineage. They all seemed so colorful their lives demanded a written account.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I don't have enough time left on this earth to pursue traditional publication which takes years. Besides, I want to maintain control over my books.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords helped me learn to format my own books and taught me the way to properly download to publishers.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love watching the characters of my stories come to life. They take on a life of their own and sometimes dictate the direction of the story.
What do your fans mean to you?
I love my fans. They are my friends and allies who give me the inspiration to write more stories.
What are you working on next?
I am working on a series of Scottish historical romance novels set in the Highlands of Scotland. My ancestor, Duncan Munro, left Scotland in the early 1800's and immigrated to America. Uncovering the Scottish connection sparked my interest in Scotland and my family there. I traveled to Scotland, met the Munros of the Highlands, and decided to write a historical novel about the people who lived on the land.
