Interview with Rick Chesler

What do you read for pleasure?
All types of thrillers, suspense, action-adventure and mysteries. Favorites include Michael Crichton, Clive Cussler, Tom Clancy, but I try to read at least something from everybody.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
kindle. Love the Amazon system behind the device.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
That's a difficult question to answer, as it's often difficult to tell for certain what's really driving sales. That said, the Goodreads platform has been good to me, as well as Twitter. I think guest blogging also has its benefits. Anything that allows you to interact directly with readers of your genre.
Describe your desk
It's glass, L-shaped, has two PC LCD monitors on it, cluttered with books, miscellaneous electronics, and my scanner and papers.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I was born in New Jersey but relocated to Los Angeles at the age of 12. My first novel, Wired Kingdom (available on Smashwords) is set in the greater Los Angeles area.
When did you first start writing?
My early attempts at novel writing came in my late 20s, but it wouldn't be for ten more years that I started getting serious about it.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Blood Harbor: A novel of suspense, began as a crowd-funded project on I conceived of the book as a self-published project from the get-go, and raised funds via Kickstarter to pay for publishing costs. The reception was warm, and the project met its funding goals (thank you, Backers!) , bringing Blood Harbor to life. This is my first self-published novel, the others having been published through small presses.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The ability to explore topics of my own choosing and present them to readers, and then to hear feedback from those readers on my execution.
What do your fans mean to you?
They mean everything to me, as without them I have no livelihood. It really makes my day when I hear from a reader who enjoyed one of my books. All readers should feel free to contact me at any time at
What are you working on next?
In the works now is an audiobook edition of Blood Harbor: A novel of suspense, due out in the first quarter of 2014. Look for it on, along with my other audiobooks.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I enjoy boating, fishing, scuba diving, and reading.
