Interview with Robert A.V. Jacobs

Published 2014-04-01.
What are you working on next?
I am departing from what I usually write, which is Fantasy and Science fiction for young Adults and Adults, and moving into the realm of Detective fiction for Adults, with the novel 'Dexxman'. Having completed the sequel to this book, entitled 'The Disappearance of Natalie Firth' I am now working on the untitled third book in the series
Who are your favorite authors?
None particularly, though in the science Fiction field Asimov, Bradbury and Arther C Clarke come out near the top.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Each new day is a delight, and having a dog who does not permit me to lay in helps.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I also write computer card Solitaire card games, and have a web site dedicated to them...147 and still counting.

I am a phillumenist (Matchbox label collector) and have about 30,000 in my collection.

I also design and create web sites, writing the source code myself, rather than using web creation software.

I like to advise authors on formatting their books, and have a web site dedicated to this (http://www.robertavjacobs.co.uk)

When I am not engaged thus, I enjoy my house in Spain and walking my dog Sally.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
The first and last page of my first book over ten years ago, eventually completed when I was 72
What is your writing process?
Stories evolve as I write them. I have no outline for a book, but just write it as it comes.
How do you approach cover design?
The background is very important, and this is selected first.

Most of my covers I submit to an Amazon Thread which is dedicated to the critique of book covers. I have always found them to be courteous and helpful.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Used to be a Sony e-reader, which evolved to a Kindle, but my reader of choice is now an IPad.
Describe your desk
Well..now there is a question..

Pretty untidy I would venture, taken up mostly by two screens and two keyboards for my two computers

One runs XP and the other windows 7..so there is little room for anything else to sit tidily.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Fareham, Hampshire in the UK, but this had no influence on my writing.

As I write Fantasy and make it all up, nothing in the real world has had much influence.
When did you first start writing?
I started when I was 72, and have now published 15 books at the age of 75
What motivated you to become an indie author?
The only thing I can say is cost and the attitude of mainsteam publishers, who seem hell bent on making themselves obsolete.

So far my only expenditure as an Indie Author was the covers for my first four books, which I ended up changing anyway. No costs have been involved in the publishing process at all.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Unsurprisingly I suppose, given the way I write is watching the story evolve.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything. While I do write mainly for my own enjoyment, it is always nice to know that someone else appreciates your work.
