Interview with Robert Moons

When did you first start writing?
I started seriously writing about three years ago.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I've always loved creative things: Art, music, and now writing. I write because I enjoy it. There are better ways of making money, so I continue to do some graphic design and illustration work, and write for fun. I put my stories out there for free and hope that others might like what I write.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Getting my stories to hundreds of readers is success in my eyes. That's all I can ask for, and Smashwords does that better than most.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I like to come up with an original idea (if that is possible) and then work it into a story. I try to stay away from the typical plots. I don't see the point from a creative perspective. I do this for all of my short stories.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
"An Acquired Taste" is my first short story. Around the same time, I started writing my book which started out as a short story, turned into a serial, and finally a novel.
What is your writing process?
For a short story, I start with an original idea. Next, I rough out the plot in my head. I then write the story plot in point form. This might even include bits and pieces of narrative, dialogue, or whatever comes to mind that I want to add in the story. Next, I write it from beginning to end. This can takes days or weeks. I'm slow but always thinking about ideas and ways to approach it. When the story is rough out, I'll put it away for a few days and look at it again with fresh eyes. At this point I'll start improving it: better sentence structures, tweak the dialogue, make things easier to understand, fix punctuation, etc.
How do you approach cover design?
As a professional graphic designer and illustrator, I do my own covers. I present a scene on the cover that is in the story; something that gives the reader an impression of what they will find in the story.
Tell us about the Lex Talionis series of short stories.
Lex Talionis is Latin for the law or retaliation. Inspired by the writings of Robert E. Howard and the TV series 'Dexter', I became interested in creating my own antihero and then writing a series of short stories that gradually develops the main character.
In the Lex Talionis series the main character doesn't have a name?
He has a name, many names as a matter of fact, but in the beginning of the stories, he is referred to as the stranger. It is much like the old spaghetti westerns with Clint Eastwood; the man with no name. Later, he is know as just 'Lex'.
'Lex' is not human, is he? Is he a vampire?
No, he isn't human, but he's not a vampire either. And talking about vampires, I only add them to these stories as a comparison to the main character. 'Lex' has no problem taking on a gang of vampires or a swat team for that matter. He is something else entirely. Much more powerful than a vampire, and he's been around for a long, long time. I'll just say that he's something new and you'll have to read future stories to find out. There are hints as to what he is in all four of the first issues. I'll just say that he is a predator of sorts and he 'feeds' on evil.I once compared him to a cross between 'Dexter' and Darth Vader. It's not exactly correct but close.
