Interview with Sara Hernandez

Published 2017-07-18.
What are you working on next?
A story that is involving sex, drugs, underage drinking, and much more...even abortion.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My God and the blessings of family, including all of my grandkids.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I love rock-hunting, and I enjoy taking care of children.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, I do! And just a friendly piece of advice, always do all of your own writing by yourself. Never, ever involve family, because they will take it and run.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The Boxcar Children.
How do you approach cover design?
I have an ebook designer named Laura Shinn who also formats my books. My illustrator is Penny Duncklee.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
The Bible, Chicken Noodle Soups, various cookbooks, and how-to books on writing.
What do you read for pleasure?
The Bible and Chicken Noodle Soup books.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I do not own a hand-held device. I read ebooks on my PC.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I'm new to self-publishing. Previously, I sent my manuscript everywhere and never heard from anyone. Except those few who wanted an arm and leg to "self-publish". Watch out for those scams.
Describe your desk.
HUGE, with everything in order...lots of room to write.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
On the Navaijo reservation. What has inspired me is my son/grandson thinking no one is like him.
When did you first start writing?
Five years ago.
What's the story behind your latest book?
This is a very personal story that is dear to me. And for certain reasons I feel as though this story might help another family, in many ways.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Becoming successful in that children will read and enjoy my books.
Can anyone write?
I think that anyone can write, but I would also like to see more realistic approaches to writing with less blood/violent scenes.
What do your fans mean to you?
They are great! They mean the world to me.
How many of us have been told to follow our dreams?
It was only until six years ago when we lost our daughter/stepdaughter, the mother of our grandson/son. He was so angry from her passing that I thought maybe, if we put this together and enjoy the good times, maybe this would help a little. And that is what we did. We wrote a lot of small stories and now we are publishing them. So, if you believe in your dreams, follow them until they come true.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I guess we will soon see...
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Since I was getting nowhere after sending out my manuscript (and waiting almost seven months) I said to myself "What are you doing? You have a great story and a great illustrator. Just do it!" So, I did.
Who are your favorite authors?
Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen

What is your writing process?
I have a strong impulse to just write! It might be something simple, like a joke, but sometimes it's the real punch lines that get me going. I love to write. It is just random thoughts, then I spend days going back over everything and correcting it, until it sounds right.

Who is Jacob? He’s a 7 year old boy who loves to play games like Hidden Toys and Hidden Ears. They are fun games! But not everyone enjoys the games with him. Other kids think he’s funny, but the teachers don’t think so. Which explains why he gets into trouble a lot of the time. Thank goodness for Grandpa who is always patient with him…even when he’s been naughty. Will Jacob ever learn to listen?
