Interview with Shawna Hansen

Describe your desk
Sitting next to my husband after a long day at work, I write on a comfy green couch and use a pillow to balance my computer on my lap. I can hear the planes flying into Logan and the Harleys driving up and down the beach as I write.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Cedar Rapids, Iowa. I was blessed with a grandmother who bought me books and teachers who taught me the magic of writing in every year of school. I spent so much time at the public library that I was hired to be a book shelver at the Kenwood branch when I was in high school.
When did you first start writing?
My first stories were in elementary school. I wrote a play in 6th grade. I loved writing in my diary.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The story behind my latest book is the struggle between expressing who you really are vs who people think you are.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I was born to be Indie! I love the freedom to connect with my readers without a layer of other people's creativity between us. I completely respect the art of editing and the art of publishing, but I am all about the writing!
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords is a beautiful place where readers and writers can share creativity without pretense or spending a fortune.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
When a fan tells me that they stayed up late to finish my book,
What do your fans mean to you?
Fans are the raspberry jelly on my toast. Without fans loving what I'm writing, the writing process is dry and crumbly.
What are you working on next?
Next up is a young adult book called "School of Fury." This is the sequel to "City of Fury" where Anjie goes to Fury and finds a lot more than just a whole new world. In "School," summer's over and Anjie comes back to Earth along with a very interesting exchange student from Fury, Kaz!
Who are your favorite authors?
I'm fickle. Today, I'm loving Milan Kundera, Patricia Briggs, Karen Moning, Alice Walker, Laura Ingalls Wilder, Beverly Cleary, Stephen King, Tad Williams, Jayne Anne Krantz, Kristin Hannah, Nicholas Sparks, William Kotzwinkle, Helen Smith and Rosanne Dingli. I love indie writers and read as many Indie books as possible.
