Interview with Patricia Gamburgo

Published 2013-08-30.
Can you tell us a little about your background, who are you and what you do?
My name is Patricia Gamburgo. When I was 12 years old, I used to ask for grid paper to design floor plans, and after, I used to draw and write “scenes” happening in these houses. Naturally, I decided to study Architecture. During those years, I needed to work in order to pay the University, so I started tutoring high school students and later, I became a teacher-assistant at the University. My students used to say “this subject sounds easy when you explain it”.
I became an Architect in December of 1980. I remember that, after my graduation, I felt that I didn’t have all the tools and answers for a design professional. So, I returned to University, for Post Graduation Engineering courses as well as continuing education. After this and during the following years, I worked with different companies, doing design and project management, as well as cost estimation and construction management (on site).
Being the manager of a big project, supervising different professionals and coordinating all the documents turned out to be my biggest professional challenge.
Looking for tools and solutions, I went to College to learn “Advanced CAD applications”, where I was introduced to the concept of Building Information Modeling (B.I.M.) and to the programs allowing the connection of all the documents of a project: I had found the answers I was looking for!
What motivated you to write the books?
I opened my website www.punchhelpers.com in 2002, and from the very beginning I trained Punch users. Again, I heard “this subject sounds easy when you explain it”. I exchanged emails with dozens of users, (some of them became friends) they sent comments and asked for long term assistance. I thought about a video series, but one of the users asked “what am I supposed to do while I am seeing the video? I need something that I can click and search 24/7” so the e-books idea was born.
I started the first draft a long time ago, creating tutorials from questions asked at the Forum. In 2012, I became the Forum moderator, and the requests for training and books multiplied, so I decided to write a series of e-books, bringing together my Punch Software experience and my knowledge as an Architect.
What is your writing process? Where do you get your ideas?
In addition of the questions asked in the Forum, I receive many emails and files from users: these elements gave me an insight of the users’ necessities. So basically, I read the questions and I wrote, created tutorials and designed the answers to the users’ questions: this is what my e- books are about.
I created a video presentation in YouTube showing how the questions are answered in my e-books. Check it at => http://youtu.be/QgK_DzIHfss
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I am a multi-tasking person! In addition to being an Architect, an e-book writer, Forum moderator and beta-tester, I love to practice yoga and take long walks.
Also, I love to spend time with my family (husband and one daughter) and travel, when possible!!!
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Simply put, Smashwords meant the difference between publishing my books or not.
