Interview with Stacey T. Hunt

What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book is called Trick, part of my new World of Many Colors trilogy. Jesse Tynan is an antisocial boy whose simple, isolated way of living is altered forever the moment he's entranced by the mysterious and seemingly gentle Emberlee Whitmore. When she invites him to a Friday-night party in New Jersey, he witnesses a murder committed by a strange boy with a glass eye and a ghastly overbite who goes by the name Ashton Blake. In no time Jesse's pulled into Ashton's world with a vengeance, when his grandmother gets captured by an otherworldly glowing-blue monster and Emberlee herself is the witch of the alternate universe Ashton comes from, where your subconsciousness takes form and fights monsters called skyrunners. Now trapped in this dark and insane world, Jesse has to find a way back to Earth so he can find his grandmother, while at the same time help Ashton find a way to stop Emberlee and wipe out the skyrunners. But there's something about Jesse and Ashton, something that Emberlee would kill for.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I tried to be traditionally published for the first few months after writing my very first full length novel at age thirteen, but none would take me. I don't know whether it was because of my age, or because that first book was really awful. I decided to make things happen myself, and that's when I self-published my books. Everything I'd heard about self-publishing is that it was impossible to make a living, reach readers, or produce a quality product. But then I heard about how some other authors like Joe Konrath and Amanda Hocking are doing well with ebooks. So I thought that I had nothing to lose. I'd written the first 3 books of my Cascade Adventures series when I decided to self-publish, and I thought it would be better than them sitting on my computer. Worst case scenario, nobody would read them, and that's what was happening anyway. And now, with how much everything has exploded (in a good way, lol), I'm so glad I decided to take this step!
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Writing is the one area in my life where I get to have absolute control. I can be or do anything when I write! Nothing is too fantastic: I can create a fancy dinner party and have monsters come waltzing in to ruin everything! Or create a character who discovers another world! Or shrink down to the size of a mouse and live inside a wall! Or tunnel into the center of the Earth and build a city of gold! Whatever I want, I can make it be.
What do your fans mean to you?
Being a writer is hard work but it’s the most satisfying work in the world to me. My job is my passion and my passion is my job. I feel so blessed to be able to tell stories to the people who really enjoy them, and get so much positive feedback and encouragement in return. I love my fans so much!!! I wanna say thanks for inspiring me to be the best I can be daily. My fans make me who I am and I love them for it.
What are you working on next?
Currently I'm working on Twister, the second book in my World of Many Colors trilogy. I'm planning to make it a NaNoWriMo novel this year!
Who are your favorite authors?
Robert A. Hunt, my dad, is my biggest influence, and that's not only because he's my dad. I love the way he writes, and he inspires me everyday. Amanda Hocking, Marissa Meyer, John Green, and Stephen King are also some of many favorites.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I wake up every morning excited to check my emails. Lately there's always at least one special fan letter telling me how my writing has influenced or inspired them, and it always makes me feel so good inside. It makes me want to write more!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
If I'm not writing then I'm usually either exercising, playing video games, or socializing for fun on Tumblr.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Well, I kind of live in the middle of nowhere, so bookstores are limited. If I'm in need of a new book to read, I'll check out Goodreads or get some recommendations from my friends, and I'll go download it to my eReader. Reading eBooks are great, but I do kind of prefer to read print books, to be honest.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Boy, do I ever! I've still got it under my bed for when I need a good laugh. The whole thing was hand-written by me, and each page had an illustration. It was about a blind princess and her adventures through the mysterious forest she ruled over. Haha, it was really bad. That thing never saw the light of day. But hey, I think that's the case with most authors and their first stories, right?
What is your writing process?
I don't really have one, haha. Once I get the idea in my head and get it outlined, I usually just sit and write until the inspiration's gone, then I'll take a break and read or go promote my stuff on the computer, and then I'll get bored with that and get back into writing, and the cycle continues. Does that count as a process? Most of my day is spent on the computer.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I used to be a big fan of the W.I.T.C.H. books by Elizabeth Lenhard. I loved the cartoon series they made of it. Haha, I still have the boxed set on my shelf!
How do you approach cover design?
All of my book covers were designed by me. For my Cascade Adventures series, I used photoshop to draw everything myself, play around with textures, effects, etc. But with my World of Many Colors trilogy, I have a mini photoshoot with my friends! I use the picture of whichever one of my pal's that look the most like my main character, then photoshop them into a book cover. Easy! Haha, I find it's so much easier, cheaper (and much more fun!) than paying someone to design it for you.
