Interview with K. Rowe

What prompted you to start writing?
I blame my best friend for getting me involved with writing. She went to a comic-con and came back with a TV script. We thought it looked simple enough and started writing our own- little did we know, we knew nothing!
How long have you been writing for?
Probably about 30 years. I got interested in high school, then had to take a break for a good few years due to military service, but since 2009, I've been writing consistently.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in San Diego. Oh, such a perfect place to live! Perfect weather, perfect beaches, perfect everything. There was always something to spark my mind as we navigated around the county. I wish I could afford to live there now.
And when were you first published?
My first book, which took me 20+ years to write is Project: Dragonslayers, and it was vanity press published in 2010.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Space Available is the third book in Dar's Adventures in Space. It takes him to the desolate former home planet of the Satirens where he deploys the Plexus, a life-giving machine which he hopes will bring the planet back to life so Satirens can call it home once again.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I write such a wide variety of genres, and traditional publishing doesn't want that. I also like the ability to control what I write, when I write, when I publish, and the cover I'll use. Okay, call me a control freak!
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
SW has been a big help getting my books out to millions that might not normally see it. I've made a lot of sales on Sony, Kobo, and Apple. Granted, I could probably go to each site and upload, but who has time for that?! And it's great that they are always thinking of new ways to improve the site, and customer service is great.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Seeing favorable reviews and hearing from folks that they loved the books. I write because I love to, but it's a big boost to have people say they enjoyed what I wrote. It keeps me motivated to write more.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything! I love interacting with them by either Facebook, email, or Twitter. And even better is getting to chat with them in person. I like to hear what they liked about a book and what they didn't, and if they want more. I'm not afraid of criticism, I think it makes us better writers.
What are you working on next?
Currently I'm working on another contemporary romance. The last one, Silks and Sand, has proven quite popular, so my newest WIP is Farmer Boys and City Girls. It's about a divorced woman who moves from Chicago to eastern Kentucky, buys a farm, and falls in love with an unlikely man. He can't understand why she's head over heels for him, he thinks of himself as a flawed individual. It is writing "close to home" but this story isn't about me!
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I have nearly 30 animals to care for. If I don't feed them, there's a riot.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I'm also a farmer with 100 acres to care for. I have my own tractor, and help hubby out with maintaining the fields.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Usually word of mouth or internet.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
No, it had to have been when I was in grade school. My mind won't access that info anymore.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I remember my mother reading Charlotte's Web to me. I loved the story, loved the fact it was on a farm, but I was very sad when Charlotte died. I realized that words can carry so much emotion. And now years later, I'm doing the same thing.
What is your writing process?
Out of bed by 7:15 am. Get the dogs out (all 4 of them), get dressed, feed dogs, feed cats (2). Stagger 100 yards up to the barn—keeping dogs in check. Feed Potbelly pig (Sherman LOUDLY demands his breakfast first), feed horses, feed chickens, ducks, and turkeys. Water everyone, pack haynets and put in paddocks, turn out horses, collect dogs, walk home. If house is quiet, sneak into my office and grab the laptop. Check email, Facebook, and maybe see if I’ve sold a few books. Settle down to writing for an hour or so. Get breakfast. Either help hubby muck out the barn, or write some more. If the weather is good, get on my 1953 Ferguson tractor and do a little work in the fields. Between 5-7 pm, bring in horses, feed, round up chickens and feed. Back home, feed dogs, hubby feeds the humans, watch a little TV or a movie. Crash until next morning. 7 days a week 365 days a year. The life of a farmer…
How do you approach cover design?
I try to make my cover a relevant "snap shot" of something in the book. For romances, I hate the thought of oiled hunks plastered on the cover--everyone does it. I like my covers to mean something. I'm tickled that for the cover of Farmer Boys and City Girls, all I need is my tractor and a dozen roses.
What advice would you give to aspiring writers?
If you have the passion, you must keep at it. Learn everything you can about writing and publishing. Find a mentor. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. And NEVER pass up someone’s invitation to help you. My mentor told me that you can’t expect miracles. Most writers will start seeing tangible success after 4-9 years of continuous writing. Another said it’s after your 10th book. So this is a profession that doesn’t cater to someone in it for instantaneous gratification. It takes several years to produce enough work and build a fan base of readers. The Amanda Hockings and Hugh Howeys are few and far between. Most of us Indies grind away year after year slowly building our repertoire and fan base. The old saying “Rome wasn’t built in a day” holds true for authors. Rarely does one see overnight success.
